3.33 · Plants · Fruit Parts of Plants

fruit any fruit part of plants, including grain as well as pulpy fruit A number of languages distinguish between different kinds of fruit. One common type of four-way distinction involves (1) nuts, (2) grain, (3) pulpy fruit surrounding a seed (the type of fruit primarily referred to in contexts containing καρπός[a]), and (4) fruit such as bananas, in which there is no noticeable seed. It is important in each instance to choose a term which will be applicable to the particular context.

1 By setting up certain highly generic meanings for βλαστάνω, δίδωμι, ἀποδίδωμι, and ποιέω, it would be possible to treat the phrase compounds in this series as being semantically endocentric. However, it seems more satisfactory to regard them as what might be called low-grade idioms with specialized meanings of the semantically head expressions.

Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT

καρπός is common in the sense of “" fruit,” ‘* produce ’’ of the land generally, e.g. P Eleph 1415 (Ptol.) τῆς δὲ γῆς κυριεύσει Kal τῶν καρπῶν (A.D. 54-67), or, more particularly, of an oliveyard, P Ryl II. 130! (a.p. 31) ἐτρύγησαν ἐκ τῶν καρπῶν οὐκ ὀλίγην ἐλᾶν, or of a vineyard, P Fay 1275 (ii/iii A.D.) τοῦ καρποῦ τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος. The phrase EvA([vev κ]αρπῶν is used in OG/S 5515 (iii/B.c.) with reference to tree-fruits, such as apples, etc.; see Dittenberger’s note ad /. and cf. PST V. 528'°(iii/B.C.) περὶ τοῦ καρποῦ τοῦ ξυλικοῦ, apparently the tax ξυλίνων καρπῶν. Another ex. of the sing. is P Oxy XIV. 1632! (A.D. 353) καρπὸν φύί -- οί)νικος χωρίων σου δύο, “186 date-crop of your two estates” (Edd.). For the metaphorical usage Rouffiac (p. 51) cites Préeve 11214 (after B.C. 84) συνιδὼν δὲ ὅτι μόνη μεγίστους ἀποδίδωσιν ἡ ἀρετὴι καρποὺς καὶ χάριτας : cf. Jas 3!7f, α΄. We have no example of καρπός = “‘ profit,’’ *‘credit,’’ as in Phil 417 (‘‘ the interest which is accruing to your credit,” Moule CG7 ad 1), but, as showing how easily this sense might arise, we may quote the corresponding use of καρπεία in P Petr III. 53 (p)§ (ili/B.C.) π]ρὸς τὰς καρπείας ἃς... . ἡμᾶς κομίζεσθαι ἐκ τοῦ [ἱ]εροῦ, ‘‘ with respect to the profits which we should obtain from the temple ’’ (Edd.) : cf. also καρπίζομαι in P Ryl IT. 11976 (A.D. 54-67) μέχρι νῦν καρπίζεται τὴν αὐτὴν ὑποθήκην ἀφ᾽ ἧς ἀπηνέγκατο εἰς λόγον ἀργυ(ρίου) (ταλάντων) é, ‘he continues up to the present to enjoy the mortgage aforesaid by which he has profited to the extent of 5 talents ’’ (Edd.). For the adj. κάρπιμος see Kazbel 1039 s.v. θερίζω.
