fringe, edge, hem decorative tassel attached to the bottom edge of a long outer garment The edge of the garment designated by κράσπεδον[a] could have been plain or decorated. In MAT 23:5 κράσπεδον denotes the tassels worn at the four corners of the outer garment (see 6.194). It is also possible that in all instances in which κράσπεδον is used in reference to Jesus’ clothing, the reference may be specifically to the tassels and not merely to the fringe or edge of the garment. The interpretation of such passages depends upon how strictly Jesus may have followed the Mosaic law and the manner in which the authors may have understood the meaning of κράσπεδον.

¹ It would be possible to treat κράσπεδον[a] simply as an abstract of shape; however, since both biblical and extrabiblical uses of κράσπεδον seem primarily associated with cloth and garments, there is some justification for treating κράσπεδον[a] in this subdomain.

ΠΥ, i. 6. α little appendage hanging down from the edge of the mantle or cloak, made of twisted wool; α tassel, tuft: Mt. ix. 20; xiv. 86; xxiii. 5; Mk. vi. 56; Lk. viii. 44. The Jews had such appendages attached to their mantles to remind them of the law, ace. to Num. xv. 37 sq. Cf. Win. RWB. s. v. Saum; [B.D.s. v. κράσπεδον, the ‘‘fringe”’ or ‘‘tassel,” which the Law required every Jew to attach to the corners of his outer garment (Numb 15°8f, Deut 2212). The word is found in the magic P Lond 12157! (iii/A.D.) (=I. p. 96) ἐξάψας κράσπετον (/. —Sov) τοῦ ἱματίου σου.
