to profess, to confess, confession to express openly one’s allegiance to a proposition or person It is often extremely difficult, if not impossible, to translate ὁμολογέω[a], ὁμολογία, and ἐξομολογέω[b] by the usual expression for ‘confess,’ since this would usually imply that one has done something wrong. It is normally necessary, therefore, to employ quite a different type of relationship, usually involving a public utterance and an expression of confidence or allegiance. For example, in MAT 10:32 it may be necessary to translate ‘whoever tells people publicly that he is loyal to me, I will tell my Father that I am loyal to that person.’ Similarly, in HEB 10:23 one may translate ‘let us hold on to the hope in which we have told people we have such confidence.’ Likewise, in ROM 15:9 one may translate ‘therefore I will tell the Gentiles how I have put my confidence in you.’

to admit, to confess to acknowledge a fact publicly, often in reference to previous bad behavior In PHP 2:11 the statement πᾶσα γλῶσσα ἐξομολογήσηται ὅτι κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστός (‘that everyone may confess that Jesus Christ is Lord’) means simply to acknowledge a fact publicly, and in this instance there is no implication of previous bad behavior.

ὁμολογέω. The root meaning of this verb ‘‘agree with’”’ is seen in the contract P Oxy II. 275! (A.D. 66) o[pJo[AJoyotow ἀλλή[AJots Τρύφων... καὶ Πτολεμαῖος, ‘agreement between Tryphon and Ptolemaeus’’: cf. the legal formula ἐπερωτηθεὶς ὡμολόγησα, ‘‘in answer to the formal question I have given my consent,’’ as in P Ryl II. 1oo!§(a.p. 238). From this the transition is easy to the sense ‘‘ acknowledge,” “publicly declare,” e.g. 76. 125°° (A.D. 28-9) ὡμολ[ό͵γησεν τὴν πυξίδα ὡς προφέρεται κενήν, “he acknowledges (having found) the box but alleges that it was empty” (Edd.), 76. 1807 (A.D. 124) ὁμολογῶ μὴ ἐγκαλεῖν σοι μηδ᾽ ἐγκαλέσειν σοι περὶ μηδενὸς πράγματος ἁπλῶς, ‘I acknowledge that I neither make nor will make any claim upon you on any Part V. 44.9
