παραβαίνω; 2 aorist παρέβην; properly, to go by the side of (in Homer twice παρβεβαως of one who stands by another's side in a war-chariot, Iliad 11,522; 13, 708 (but here of men on foot)); to go past or to pass over without touching a thing; tropically, to overstep, neglect, violate, transgress, with an accusative of the thing (often so in secular authors from Aeschylus down (cf. παρά, IV. 1 and 2)): τήν παράδοσιν, Mat_15:2; τήν ἐντολήν τοῦ Θεοῦ, Mat_15:3; ὁ παραβαίνων, he that transgresseth, oversteppeth, i. e. who does not hold to the true doctrine, opposed to μένειν ἐν τῇ διδαχή, 2Jn_1:9 R G (where L T Tr WH ὁ προάγων (which see)) (so οἱ παραβαίνοντες, transgressors of the law, Sir_40:14 (cf. In imitation of the Hebrew ρεΜψ followed by ξΔο, we find παραβαίνειν ἐκ τίνος and ἀπό τίνος, so to go past as to turn aside from, i. e. to depart, leave, be turned from: ἐκ τῆς ὁδοῦ, Exo_32:8; Deu_9:12; ἀπό τῶν ἐντολῶν, Deu_17:20; ἀποπο τῶν λόγων, Deu_28:14, the Alex. manuscript; once so in the N. T.: ἐκ (L T Tr WH ἀπό) τῆς ἀποστολῆς, of one who abandons his trust (R. V. fell away], Act_1:25. (In the Sept. also for ςΘαΗψ, δΕτΔιψ, to break, ωΘΡθΘδ, to deviate, turn aside.) παραβαίνω [page 480] pass on occurs in P Ryl II. 77 .44 (A.D. 192) ὀφείλει εἰς τὴν κατεπείγο [υσα ]ν ἀρχὴν παραβαίνειν , he ought to pass on to the office immediately required (Edd.). [For the omission of ἄν in this last sentence in the apodosis of unfulfilled condition, see s.v. ἄν , and contra Robertson, Gr. p. 920 f.] Παραβαίνω is frequent in connexion with wills, e.g. P Oxy III. 494 .28 (A.D. 156) where provision is made that anyone who shall disobey (τὸν παραβησόμενον ) the conditions of a will shall forfeit to the party abiding by it (τῷ ἐμμένοντι ) the damages and other sums.
