Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT

παρεπίδημος. The sense of ‘‘a sojourner,”’ or “‘a stranger ”’ settled in a particular district only for a time, which is confined in the LXX to Gen 234, Ps 38(39)!, and in the NT to1 Pet 12 (see Hort’s note), 211, Heb 114%, can be well authenticated in our documents. Thus in a Will, P Petr IIL. 7% (Bc. 238-7), a bequest is made to a certain Apoilonius—tapertδημον ὃς καὶ Συριστὶ ᾿Ιωνάθας [καλεῖται, and in P Tor II. 815 (8.6. 118) παρεπιδημοῦντες (feregrinz) and κατοικοῦντες (tzcolae) are distinguished. Cf. also OG/S 383° (mid. i/B.C.) πλῆθος ἐπιχώριον Kal παρεπίδημον, and Polyb. xxxii. 22. 4. The corr. verb is common, e.g. P Petr II. 13(19)!# (mid. ili/B.C.) ὅπως τ[οῦτό]ν ye τὸν χρόνον παρεπιδημῆις, ‘in order that for this season at least you may sojourn with us ’”’ (Ed.), BGU I. 113! (A.D. 143) βουλόμενος παρεπιδημεῖν πρὸς καιρόν, P Oxy III. 473? (A.p. 138-160) a decree in honour of a gymnasiarch by the magistrates and people of Oxyrhynchus together with the ‘‘resident’” Roman and Alexandrian citizens—Plopatoy καὶ ᾿Αλεξανδρέων τοῖς
