father-in-law the father of one’s spouse In a number of languages one must indicate explicitly the various components of meaning in ‘father-in-law.’ For example, πενθερός in JHN 18:13 may be rendered as ‘Caiaphas had married the daughter of Annas’ or ‘the daughter of Annas had become the wife of Caiaphas.’
