1 περιβόλαιον[a] and σκέπασμα could also be treated as derivatives based on their respective corresponding events involving the covering of an object. The derivatives would then be merely instruments for covering. Since, however, in the NT these two terms are so closely associated with clothing as covering, they are here treated in this subdomain. 2 There are no doubt certain minor distinctions in meaning for the four terms in 6.172, but it is impossible to determine the distinctive features on the basis of existing contexts. There are considerable differences of opinion about φαιλόνης, regarded by many as a loan word from Latin paenula.

περιβόλαιον in the wider sense of ‘* covering,’’ ‘‘ clothing,” rather than “veil” (AV marg.) in 1 Cor 1115 (cf. Ps 103(104)®) may be illustrated from Aristeas 158 ἐκ τῶν περιβολαίων παράσημον ἡμῖν μνείας δέδωκεν, ‘in our clothing, too, he has given usa symbol of remembrance ’’ (Thackeray).
