to add to add something to an existing quantity In a number of languages it is not at all difficult to speak of ‘adding things,’ but to add events may provide some special difficulties in restructuring. For example, in LUK 3:20 it may be important to translate as ‘he had done many other bad things, but he also did this,’ and in GAL 2:6 it may be helpful to translate ‘for those who were of repute did not say that I should do anything more than I was doing.’

προστίθημι, “add.” With Heb 1219 we may compare Chres¢. II. 372% (11/A.D.) Kal προσέθηκεν: “Ey Qs ἔφης ἄλλους ἐσχηκέναι παῖδας, and P Strass 1. 412! (A.D. 250) Σαραπίων ῥ]ήτωρ προσέθηκεν (his λόγος follows). Other exx. of the verb are P Oxy III. 4713 (ii/A-p.) π]ροσθήσω τι κύριε περ[ὶ οὗ] θαυμάσεις οἶμαι, “I will add a fact, my lord, which will, I expect, excite your wonder ’’ (Edd.), 26. VII. 1062 (ii/A.p.) προσθεὶς ὅτι τὰ θέρειά ἐστιν τὰ κρείσσονα, ‘‘adding that the summer ones (sc. fleeces) were the best” (Ed.), P Ryl 11. 15327 (a.p. 138-161) ταῦτα of With the use of the verb in Ac 2 Preuschen (HZNT ad 1) compares Demosth. xviii. 39 ὅσα ἑκουσίως προσετίθετο τῶν πολισμάτων. The confident assertion of Hebraism in the idiom προσέθετο πέμψαι, which Luke (20"f.) deliberately substitutes for the πάλιν ἀπέστειλε of Mk 121, needs some reconsideration : see Proleg. p. 233. Helbing (Gr. p- iv.), goes so far as to call it ‘‘a good Greek construction,” adding naturally that its extreme frequency in the LXX is due to ‘‘ mechanical imitation of the original.”’ The very fact that no other Hebraism has ever been discovered in Josephus (see Thumb AeZ/en. p- 125f., Schmidt Jos. p. 514ff., Deissmann BS p. 67 π.1) might be fairly held to prove that the locution was really Greek.
