Buttmann, 20 (18); Winer's Grammar, § 8, 1) ((Aram. ρΘθΘπΘΰ, stative emphatic of ρΘθΘο.) Hebrew ωΘ�θΘο), adversary (one who opposes another in purpose or act); the appellation is given to:
1. the prince of evil spirits, the inveterate adversary of God and of Christ (see διάβολος, and in πονηρός, 2b.): Mar_3:1-35 :(),; ; Luk_10:18; Luk_11:18; 1Co_5:5; 2Co_11:14; 1Th_2:18; 1Ti_1:20; Rev_2:9; Rev_2:13; Rev_2:24; Rev_3:9; he incites to apostasy from God and to sin, Mat_4:10; Mar_1:13; Luk_4:8 R L in brackets; Luk_22:31; Act_5:3; 1Co_7:5; 2Co_2:11 (10); 1Ti_5:15; circumventing men by stratagems, 2Co_11:14; 2Th_2:9; the worshippers of idols are said to be under his control, Act_26:18; Rev_12:9; he is said both himself ἐισέρχεσθαι εἰς τινα, in order to act through him, Luk_22:3; Joh_13:27; and by his demons to take possession of the bodies of men and to afflict them with diseases, Luk_13:16, cf. Mat_12:26; 2Co_12:7; by God's assistance he is overcome, Rom_16:20; on Christ's return from heaven he will be bound with chains for a thousand years, but when the thousand years are finished he will walk the earth in yet greater power, Rev_20:2; Rev_20:7, but shortly after will be given over to eternal punishment, Rev_20:10.
