ashes the residue from a burned substance It may be important in rendering σποδὸς δαμάλεως to indicate that the ashes are the result of the animal having been burned as a sacrifice, for example, ‘the ashes of a heifer burned as a sacrifice.’ Otherwise, the relationship between ‘ashes’ and ‘heifer’ may be difficult, if not impossible, for readers to understand.

The adj. σπόδιαι, ‘“‘ash-coloured,”’ ‘‘grey,’’ is applied to goats (alyes) in P Hib I. 120° (B.c. 250-49): cf. PSI VI. 5698 (B.C. 253-2).
