V. marg. interpreting spuritual things to spiritual men); cf. Sept. συνκρίνω. In the difficult passage 1 Cor 218 AV and RV follow the late usage of συνκρίνω = παραβάλλω (cf. Lob. Phryn. p- 278f.) and translate ‘compare’ (so also Field ZVotes, p- 168), but Lightfoot (Modes, p. 180f.) prefers the meaning “combine” (cf. RV marg.) and cites Theod. Mops. ad /.: διὰ τῶν τοῦ πνεύματος ἀποδείξεων τὴν τοῦ πνεύματος διδασκαλίαν πιστούμεθα. Others take the verb as = “interpret,” in keeping with its application in the LXX to the interpretation of dreams (Gen 40%, 4112, Dan 57; cf. Polyb. xiv. 3. 7 συνέκρινε καὶ διηρεύνα τὰ λεγόμενα). We can produce no clear evidence bearing on any of these renderings from our sources, where the prevailing sense of the word is ‘‘decide,’’ especially with reference to must suffice—P Lille I. 1 verso®?
