a group of a thousand Normally, however, ἐν δέκα χιλιάσιν is simply translated as ‘with ten thousand soldiers.’
In REV 5:11 the implication is that each group consists of a thousand each, but the expression ‘thousands upon thousands’ is really a way of emphasizing the enormous number. In a number of languages the equivalent would be ‘millions’ or ‘an exceedingly large number.’

χιλιάς. We may note P Oxy IV. 74218 (B.c. 2) (as amended Berichtigungen p. 328) ὅ]ρα ἐμὲ ἠγορακέναι πᾳρ[ὰ ΙΠόθο]υ τὴν χιλίαν δέσμην (δραχμῶν) δίεκάπΊεντε, “see I have bought from Pothus the thousand bundles for fifteen drachmae.” But Witkowski (Z//.? p. 128) understands τὴν χιλίαν δέσμην = ἑκάστην τὴν χιλιάδα δεσμῶν, as meaning “ αἵ fifteen drachmae for a bundle of a thousand.
