to trap, to catch off guard, to catch in a mistake (figurative extension of meaning of term meaning literally: ‘to hunt, to trap,’ not occurring in the NT) to acquire information about an error or fault, with the purpose of causing harm or trouble In a number of languages it is possible to retain the figurative meaning of ‘trap’ or ‘catch,’ but in a number of instances other figures are used, for example, ‘to cause to trip,’ ‘to cause to fall,’ ‘to hear wrong words from his mouth,’ or ‘to use his words against him.’

ἀγρεύω: 1 aor. ἤγρευσα; (ἄγραν ; to catch (properly, wild animals, fishes): fig., Mk. xii. 13 ἵνα αὐτὸν ἀγρεύσωσι λόγῳ in order to entrap him by some inconsiderate remark elicited from him in conversation, cf. Lk. xx. 20. (In Anthol. it often denotes to ensnare in the toils of love, captivate; cf. maybevo, Mt. xxii. 15; σαγηνεύω, Leian. Tim. 25.)

ἀγρεύω. In the literal sense this verb occurs in P Louvre 10632 (= Chrest. I. 167}, B.C. 131) ἐὰν τῆς TapaxA[s......... oli ἁλιεῖς δυνηθῶσι ἀγρεύειν τὸν [αὐτὸν τρόπον, ὃν καὶ] πρότερον εἰθ[εἸσμένοι e[v] τόποις [ἦ]σαν, and P Oxy I. 1229(iii/iv A.D.) ἡμεῖ[ς] δὲ ἀγρεύειν τῶν θηρίων δυνά[με]θα οὐδὲ ἕν, ‘and we cannot catch a single animal” (Edd. ).
