Priestly Intercession

2 sermons

Priestly intercession is a profound theme woven throughout Scripture, illustrating the vital role of mediation between God and humanity. In the Old Testament, the priests served as intermediaries, offering sacrifices and prayers on behalf of the people, as seen in Leviticus 16:30-34, where the Day of Atonement highlights the necessity of atonement for sin. This foreshadowing culminates in the New Testament with Jesus Christ, our High Priest, who, as described in Hebrews 4:14-16, not only sympathizes with our weaknesses but also provides direct access to the Father. His sacrificial death and resurrection fulfill the ultimate requirement for intercession, as articulated in Romans 8:34, where Paul assures us that Christ intercedes for us at the right hand of God. Furthermore, Jesus teaches in John 17:20-21 about the importance of unity among believers, emphasizing that His intercessory prayer extends beyond His immediate disciples to all who would believe in Him. As believers, we are encouraged to approach the throne of grace with confidence (Hebrews 4:16), knowing that our High Priest continually intercedes on our behalf, bridging the gap between our frailty and God's holiness.
