Purgatory Refuted

2 sermons

Purgatory, a concept often associated with the purification of souls before entering heaven, finds no explicit support in Scripture. The Bible teaches that salvation and sanctification are completed through faith in Jesus Christ, as articulated in Ephesians 2:8-9, which emphasizes that it is by grace we are saved, not by works. Furthermore, Hebrews 10:14 asserts that "by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy," indicating that believers are fully justified and sanctified through Christ's atoning work. The notion of a purgatorial state contradicts the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice, as seen in John 19:30, where Jesus declares, "It is finished," affirming that all necessary atonement for sin has been accomplished. Additionally, 2 Corinthians 5:8 reassures believers that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, negating any intermediate state of purification. Instead of purgatory, Scripture calls for a life of holiness and obedience, as believers are urged to pursue sanctification in this life (1 Thessalonians 4:3). The teachings of the Bible emphasize the immediate transition to eternal life for those who trust in Christ, offering hope and assurance rather than fear of a purgatorial process.
