The Conflict of Self and God

2 sermons

The conflict between self and God is a profound theme woven throughout Scripture, illustrating the struggle of humanity to align with divine will. In Romans 7:15, Paul articulates this inner turmoil, stating, 'For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.' This conflict is not merely personal but reflects a cosmic battle between the flesh and the Spirit, as highlighted in Galatians 5:17, where Paul notes that 'the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh.' Jesus, in His teachings, calls us to a radical reorientation of our lives, urging us to deny ourselves and take up our cross daily (Luke 9:23). This call to self-denial is echoed in Matthew 5:44, where He instructs us to love our enemies, challenging our natural inclinations. The resolution of this conflict lies in surrendering our will to God, as expressed in James 4:7, which encourages believers to 'Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.' Ultimately, the journey of faith involves a continual struggle between self-assertion and submission to God's sovereign plan, a dialectic that shapes our spiritual growth and understanding of His grace.
