14 Bible Verses on Abandoning Friends

14 verses

In times of need, the loyalty of friends is a precious gift, and the Bible teaches the importance of standing by one another. Proverbs 18:24 and Proverbs 27:10 caution against abandoning friends, emphasizing the value of loyal companions. The pain of betrayal by a close friend is poignantly expressed in Psalms 55:12-14, highlighting the depth of hurt that can result from such actions. In contrast, Psalms 27:10 offers reassurance that even when human friends fail, God remains a constant source of comfort and support, a truth that guides the Christian community's approach to relationships, as seen in 1 Corinthians 5:11.

A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who stays closer than a brother.
Do not forsake your friend or your father’s friend, and do not go to your brother’s house in the day of your calamity; better a neighbor nearby than a brother far away.
For it is not an enemy who insults me; that I could endure. It is not a foe who rises against me; from him I could hide. But it is you, a man like myself, my companion and close friend. We shared sweet fellowship together; we walked with the crowd into the house of God.
Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me.
But now I am writing you not to associate with anyone who claims to be a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a verbal abuser, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.
Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good character.”
If anyone comes to you but does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your home or even greet him. Whoever greets such a person shares in his evil deeds.
What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go out to search for the one that is lost? And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he rejoices more over that one sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray. In the same way, your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish. If your brother sins against you, go and confront him privately. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, regard him as you would a pagan or a tax collector.
May they know that You alone, whose name is the LORD, are Most High over all the earth.
He who walks with the wise will become wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed.
When the Pharisees saw this, they asked His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners. ”
But I have this against you: You have abandoned your first love.
All this time you have not deserted your brothers, up to this very day, but have kept the charge given you by the LORD your God.
Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership can righteousness have with wickedness? Or what fellowship does light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement can exist between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will dwell with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be My people.” “Therefore come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.” And: “I will be a Father to you, and you will be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”
