11 Bible Verses on Excess

11 verses

The Bible teaches that a life of excess and overindulgence can lead to spiritual emptiness and separation from God. In 1 John, believers are warned against loving the world and its desires, which can distract from a genuine relationship with God. The apostle Paul cautions against drunkenness and excess in Ephesians, urging instead a life of sobriety and Spirit-filled living. Additionally, Jesus teaches in Luke and Paul writes in Romans, emphasizing the importance of living with simplicity and humility, uncontrolled by worldly desires, as also reflected in Proverbs.

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not from the Father but from the world. The world is passing away, along with its desires; but whoever does the will of God remains forever.
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to reckless indiscretion. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.
And He said to them, “Watch out! Guard yourselves against every form of greed, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
Wine is a mocker, strong drink is a brawler, and whoever is led astray by them is not wise.
Stop drinking only water and use a little wine instead, because of your stomach and your frequent ailments.
For you have spent enough time in the past carrying out the same desires as the Gentiles: living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and detestable idolatry.
As God’s steward, an overseer must be above reproach—not self-absorbed, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not greedy for money.
If you find honey, eat just what you need, lest you have too much and vomit it up.
But now I am writing you not to associate with anyone who claims to be a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a verbal abuser, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.
The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery; idolatry and sorcery; hatred, discord, jealousy, and rage; rivalries, divisions, factions, and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
