11 Bible Verses on True Prophet

11 verses

According to Scripture, a true prophet is one who speaks the words of God, guided by the Holy Spirit. In Deuteronomy, the Lord establishes a test for discerning true prophets, saying that their words must come to pass. The New Testament, particularly in Matthew and John, emphasizes the importance of fruit and character in identifying genuine prophets, while Numbers highlights the role of dreams and visions in prophetic ministry. Ultimately, as 2 Peter explains, prophetic words are the result of being "carried along by the Holy Spirit," making them a reliable guide for God's people.

But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name that I have not commanded him to speak, or to speak in the name of other gods, that prophet must be put to death.” You may ask in your heart, “How can we recognize a message that the LORD has not spoken?” When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD and the message does not come to pass or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him.
By their fruit you will recognize them. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. So then, by their fruit you will recognize them.

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God. For many false prophets have gone out into the world.

He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.
The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must listen to him.
For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders that would deceive even the elect, if that were possible.
And this was John’s testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, “Who are you?” He did not refuse to confess, but openly declared, “I am not the Christ.” “Then who are you?” they inquired. “Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.” So they said to him, “Who are you? We need an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet: “I am a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’” Then the Pharisees who had been sent asked him, “Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
