1 Chronicles 14
BSA1 Now Hiram [a Phoenician city] king of Tyre sent [dispatched, as a messenger] envoys [messengers, representatives] to David, along with cedar logs [timber of cedars], stonemasons [skilled craftsmen, artificers of walls], and carpenters [artificers of wood], to build [construct, establish] a palace [a house, dwelling place] for him. word study 2 And David realized [perceived, knew by experience] that the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] had established [confirmed, set up] him as king [royal ruler, monarch] over Israel [the descendants of Jacob, God’s chosen people] and had highly exalted [lifted up on high, elevated] his kingdom [royal power, dominion] for the sake of [because of, on account of] His people [nation, community] Israel [the symbolic name of Jacob, referring to his descendants]. word study 3 And David [the youngest son of Jesse and a king of Israel] took [to get, acquire, or receive] more wives [women, female partners] in Jerusalem [the city of peace, the capital of Palestine] and became [to be, to come into being] the father [to beget, to give birth to] of more [additional, further] sons [male children, descendants] and daughters [female children, offspring]. word study 4 These [specific, particular] are the names [fame, renown, reputation] of the children [sons, offspring] born [brought forth, begotten] to him in [within the city of] Jerusalem [the city of peace]: Shammua [a leader, a chief], Shobab [rebellious, a rebel], Nathan [a giver, a gift], Solomon [peaceful, a peacemaker], word study 5 Ibhar [a son of King David], Elishua [born during David’s reign], Elpelet [God is deliverance], word study 6 Nogah [a son of King David], Nepheg [meaning to flourish], Japhia [exalted, lifted up], word study 7 Elishama [a man of God, my God has heard], Beeliada [my lord knows], and Eliphelet [God is deliverance, Eliphalet]. word study 8 When the Philistines [a non-Israelite people, immigrants from other places] heard that David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] had been anointed [set apart, consecrated] king [a royal ruler, a monarch] over all [the entire nation of] Israel [the descendants of Jacob], they all [every single one of them] went in search of him [to seek, to find]; but David learned of this [heard, received news] and went out [came forth, marched out] to face [meet, confront] them [the Philistines, his enemies]. word study 9 Now the Philistines [a group of non-Semitic people, immigrants from other places] had come [approached, entered the area] and raided [made a raid, spread themselves] the Valley [lowland area, region] of Rephaim [where the Raphaite giants lived, a place of ancient giants]. word study 10 So David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] inquired of God [Elohim, the supreme God], “Should I go up [ascend, rise] against the Philistines [inhabitants of Philistia, a region in Israel]? Will You deliver [give, put] them into my hand [an open hand; strength, a side or share]?” “Go [ascend, rise],” replied the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], “for I will deliver [give, put] them into your hand [an open hand; strength, a side or share].” word study 11 So David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] and his men went up [ascended, to ascend] to Baal-perazim [a place of breaking through, the Lord of breaking through], where he defeated [smiteth, struck down] the Philistines [enemies of God’s people] and said, “Like a bursting flood [a breach of waters, a sudden outburst], God [Elohim, the supreme God] has burst out [broken through, broken in upon] against my enemies [those who hate or oppose me] by my hand [my strength, my power].” So they called [named, proclaimed] that place [location] Baal-perazim [the Lord of breaking through]. word study 12 There the Philistines abandoned [left behind, forsaken] their gods [Elohim, idols, false deities], and David [the king of Israel, a man after God’s heart] ordered [gave a commandment, spoke] that they be burned [consumed, destroyed] in the fire [burning, flame]. word study 13 Once again [still, yet again] the Philistines [inhabitants of Philistia, a non-Israelite people] raided [made a raid, spread themselves abroad] the valley [lowland area, region of conflict]. word study 14 So David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] again inquired [to ask, seek guidance] of God [Elohim, the one supreme God], who answered him, “Do not march up [to ascend, go up] after them, but [turning away] circle around [to turn, surround] them and attack them in front of [opposite, before] the balsam trees [a shrub producing valuable sap]. word study 15 As soon as you hear [a noise] the sound of marching [like footsteps, a rustling] in the tops of the balsam trees [mulberry trees, a specific type], move out [go forth, advance] to battle [war, conflict], because this will mean that God [Elohim, the supreme God] has marched out [gone forth, come out] before you to strike [smite, hit] the camp [army, host] of the Philistines [enemies, a specific nation].” word study 16 So David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] did as God [Elohim, the supreme Creator] had commanded [given orders, appointed] him, and they struck down [smiting, hitting] the army [camp, group of people] of the Philistines [a person from the region of Philistia] all the way from Gibeon [a Levitical city in Benjamin] to Gezer [a city in Palestine, a portion]. word study 17 And David’s [reputation] fame went out into every [surrounding, neighboring] land, and the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] caused all [every, entire] nations to fear [dread, have awe of] him. word study
