1 In the twenty-seventh [twenty and seventh] year of Jeroboam’s [the people will contend] reign [to rule, to advise] over Israel [the symbolic name of Jacob, also referring to his descendants], Azariah [helped by God] son of Amaziah [Jehovah is mighty] became king [a royal person, ruler] of Judah [the tribe descended from Judah, the son of Jacob]. word study 2 He was sixteen [a son of sixteen years] years old when he became [began to reign, started ruling] king, and he reigned [ruled as king, exercised royal power] in Jerusalem [the city of peace, the capital city] fifty-two [two and fifty] years. His mother’s [female parent, maternal figure] name was Jecoliah [Jecholiah, mother of Uzziah]; she was from [of, belonging to] Jerusalem. word study 3 And he did what was right [upright, just, pleasing to God] in the eyes [sight, perception] of the LORD [Yehovah], just as his father [parent, ancestor] Amaziah [Jehovah is mighty] had done [accomplished, made]. word study 4 Nevertheless [save that, except], the high places [cultic platforms, elevations] were not taken away [removed, destroyed]; the people [nation, Amaw] continued sacrificing [offering, slaughtering] and burning incense [making offerings, presenting burnt offerings] there [in those high places, still]. word study 5 And the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] afflicted the king with leprosy [a skin disease, to be leprous] until the day he died, so that he lived in a separate house [a house apart, in freedom] while his son Jotham [Jehovah is perfect] had charge of the palace [the house, the royal residence] and governed [to judge, to vindicate] the people of the land [a nation, a territory]. word study 6 As for the rest [remainder, what is left] of the acts [accomplishments, deeds] of Azariah [the name of nineteen different Israelites], along with all [everything, the entirety] his accomplishments [what he did, his achievements], are they not [is it not the case, not so] written [recorded, inscribed] in the Book [scroll, written document] of the Chronicles [events, history] of the Kings [rulers, monarchs] of Judah [the tribe descended from Judah, the region of Judah]? word study 7 And Azariah [slept with his fathers] rested with his fathers [ancestors, heritage] and was buried [laid to rest, interred] near them in the City [town, settlement] of David [the king]. And his son [descendant, heir] Jotham [Jehovah is perfect] reigned [ruled, governed] in his place [stead, position]. word study 8 In the thirty-eighth year of Azariah’s [king of Judah, a leader of God’s people] reign [to rule, to have dominion] over Judah [a tribe of Israel, the southern kingdom], Zechariah [Jehovah remembers, a king of Israel] son of Jeroboam [a king of Israel, a leader who contended with God] became king [a ruler, a monarch] of Israel [God’s chosen people, the northern kingdom], and he reigned [to rule, to have authority] in Samaria [a city, the capital of Israel, a watch mountain] six months [a period of time, a lunar cycle]. word study 9 And he did evil [wickedness, morally wrong] in the sight [presence, before the eyes] of the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God], as his fathers [ancestors, forefathers] had done [committed, practiced]. He did not turn away [depart, remove himself] from the sins [transgressions, rebellions] that Jeroboam [the people will contend] son of Nebat [an Ephraimite] had caused [led, made] Israel [God’s chosen people] to commit [sin, do wrong]. word study 10 Then Shallum [a conspirator] son of Jabesh conspired [made a secret plan, plotted] against Zechariah, struck [smiting, attacking] him down and killed [put to death, murdered] him in front of [before, in the presence of] the people [a nation, a crowd], and reigned [ruled, took the throne] in his place [stead, position]. word study 11 As for the rest [remainder, what is left] of the acts [events, deeds] of Zechariah [Jehovah remembers, a king of Israel], they are indeed written [recorded, inscribed] in the Book [scroll, written document] of the Chronicles [history, accounts] of the Kings [rulers, monarchs] of Israel [God’s chosen people]. word study 12 So the word [message, promise] of the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord God] spoken [communicated, declared] to Jehu [the king of Israel] was fulfilled [came to pass, accomplished]: “Four [to the fourth generation, spanning four generations] generations [descendants, sons] of your sons [children, offspring] will sit [dwell, reign] on the throne [seat of power, royal authority] of Israel [the nation, God’s people].” word study 13 In the thirty-ninth [thirtieth and ninth] year of Uzziah’s [my strength is Jehovah] reign [kingly rule, sovereignty] over Judah, Shallum [a personal name] son of Jabesh became king [a ruler, monarch], and he reigned [ruled, advised] in Samaria [watch mountain, the capital city] one full [complete, entire] month [a lunar cycle, a period of time]. word study 14 Then Menahem [the comforter] son of Gadi went up [ascended, from a lower to a higher position] from Tirzah [a city in ancient Palestine] to Samaria [the capital city of the northern kingdom of Israel], struck down [smiting, to hit or attack] and killed [put to death, slew] Shallum [a king of Israel] son of Jabesh [an Israelite], and reigned [to rule, to be king] in his place [underneath, in his stead]. word study 15 As for the rest [remainder, what is left] of the acts [deeds, events] of Shallum [a king of Israel], along with the conspiracy [secret plot, unlawful alliance] he led [initiated, sparked], they are indeed written [recorded, inscribed] in the Book [scroll, written document] of the Chronicles [historical records, accounts] of the Kings [rulers, monarchs] of Israel [God’s chosen people]. word study 16 At that time [then, in a past era] Menahem, starting from [proceeding out of] Tirzah, attacked [smote, struck with force] Tiphsah [a city in Mesopotamia] and everyone [all the inhabitants] in its vicinity [surrounding region], because they would not [refused to] open [to unlock, to surrender] their gates [city entrances]. So he attacked [struck with violence] Tiphsah and ripped open [tore apart, broke open] all the pregnant [with child, expecting] women [females, mothers]. word study 17 In the thirty-ninth year of Azariah’s [king of Judah, a leader of God’s people] reign [to rule, have dominion] over Judah [a tribe of Israel, descended from Judah], Menahem [comforter] son of Gadi became king [a ruler, monarch] of Israel [God’s chosen people, descendants of Jacob], and he reigned [to advise, counsel, rule] in Samaria [watch mountain, the capital city] ten [a decade, a period of completion] years. word study 18 And he did [that which was] evil [bad, morally wrong] in the sight [eye, perception] of the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God], and throughout his reign he did not turn away [depart, remove himself] from the sins [guilt, punishment for sin] that Jeroboam [the people will contend] son of Nebat [an Ephraimite] had caused Israel [the descendants of Jacob] to commit [to sin, to miss the mark]. word study 19 Then Pul [the king of Assyria, a powerful ruler] king of Assyria [a major ancient empire] invaded [came against, attacked] the land [the territory, the earth], and Menahem [a king of Israel, the comforter] gave Pul [as a form of tribute] a thousand [a large number, a multitude] talents [a unit of weight or currency] of silver [a valuable metal, wealth] in order to gain [obtain, secure] his support [help, assistance] and strengthen [establish, confirm] his own grip [power, control] on the kingdom [the realm, the dominion]. word study 20 Menahem exacted [demanded, imposed a tax] this money [silver, payment] from each of the wealthy [mighty, powerful] men of Israel [the descendants of Jacob, God’s chosen people]—fifty [a specific quantity, a large amount] shekels [a unit of weight or currency] of silver [a valuable metal, a form of wealth] from each man [individual, person]—to give [offer, pay] to the king [ruler, sovereign] of Assyria [a powerful nation, a major world power]. So the king of Assyria [the ruler of a dominant empire] withdrew [turned back, retreated] and did not remain [stay, abide] in the land [the territory, the country]. word study 21 As for the rest [remainder, what is left] of the acts [deeds, accomplishments] of Menahem [the comforter, a king of Israel], along with all [everything, the entirety] his accomplishments [works, achievements], are they not [is it not the case] written [recorded, inscribed] in the Book [scroll, written document] of the Chronicles [events, history] of the Kings [rulers, monarchs] of Israel [God’s chosen people]? word study 22 And Menahem [slept, died, and was buried] rested with his fathers [ancestors, heritage], and his son [descendant, offspring] Pekahiah reigned [ruled, had dominion] in his place [stead, position, underneath him]. word study 23 In the fiftieth [half a century, a period of fifty years] year of Azariah’s [a king of Judah, also known as Uzziah] reign [to rule, to have dominion] over Judah [the tribe and region of Judah], Pekahiah [a king of Israel] son of Menahem [a king of Israel, meaning comforter] became king [to reign, to have royal authority] of Israel [the symbolic name of Jacob, referring to his descendants] and reigned [to rule, to have dominion] in Samaria [the capital city of the northern kingdom of Israel, meaning watch mountain] two years [a period of twenty-four months, a short time]. word study 24 And he did [that which was] evil [morally wrong, bad] in the sight [eye, perception] of the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord God] and did not turn away [depart, remove] from the sins [guilt, punishment for sin] that Jeroboam [the people will contend] son of Nebat [an Ephraimite] had caused [made, led] Israel [the descendants of Jacob] to commit [to sin, miss the mark]. word study 25 Then his officer [captain, high-ranking official], Pekah son of Remaliah, conspired [plotted, tied together a plan] against him along with Argob, Arieh, and fifty men [Gileadites, inhabitants of the region] of Gilead. And at the citadel [fortress, high palace] of the king’s palace in Samaria, Pekah struck down [slew, smote] and killed [put to death, murdered] Pekahiah and reigned [ruled, took the throne] in his place [stead, position as king]. word study 26 As for the rest [remainder, what is left] of the acts [deeds, accomplishments] of Pekahiah [a king of Israel], along with all [everything, the entirety] his accomplishments [achievements, works], they are indeed written [recorded, inscribed] in the Book [scroll, written document] of the Chronicles [history, events] of the Kings [rulers, monarchs] of Israel [God’s chosen people]. word study 27 In the fifty-second [two and fiftieth] year of Azariah’s [King of Judah, a leader of God’s people] reign [to rule, to have dominion] over Judah [the tribe descended from Judah, a son of Jacob], Pekah [a king of Israel, a captain] son of Remaliah [protected by Jehovah, a father of a king] became king [a ruler, a monarch] of Israel [the symbolic name of Jacob, a nation], and he reigned [to advise, to counsel] in Samaria [watch mountain, a capital city] twenty [a period of complete waiting, a time of fullness] years. word study 28 And he did [what was] evil [bad, morally wrong] in the sight [eye, perception] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] and did not turn away [depart, remove] from the sins [guilt, punishment for sin] that Jeroboam [the people will contend] son of Nebat [an Ephraimite] had caused [led, made] Israel [the descendants of Jacob] to commit [sin, miss the mark]. word study 29 In the days [period of time, era] of Pekah [a king of Israel, originally a captain] king of Israel, Tiglath-pileser [a powerful Assyrian king] king of Assyria came [approached, invaded] and captured [took control of, conquered] Ijon, Abel-beth-maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead [a mountainous region, rocky region], and Galilee [a region in northern Palestine], including [comprising, encompassing] all the land [territory, region] of Naphtali, and he took [carried away, deported] the people as captives [prisoners, exiles] to Assyria [the Assyrian empire, a powerful nation]. word study 30 Then Hoshea [the son of Elah, a leader] son of Elah led a conspiracy [formed a secret plot, made a treasonous alliance] against Pekah [the king of Israel] son of Remaliah. In the twentieth [two decades, a score of years] year of Jotham [Jehovah is perfect, the king of Judah] son of Uzziah [my strength is Jehovah], Hoshea attacked [struck, smote] Pekah, killed [put to death, slew] him, and reigned [ruled, governed] in his place [stead, position]. word study 31 As for the rest [remainder, what is left] of the acts [accomplishments, deeds] of Pekah [a king of Israel], along with all [everything, the entirety] his accomplishments [achievements, works], they are indeed written [recorded, inscribed] in the Book [scroll, written document] of the Chronicles [history, events] of the Kings [rulers, monarchs] of Israel [God’s chosen people]. word study 32 In the second [two-year] year of the reign [rule, kingdom] of Pekah [son of Remaliah, captain-turned-king] son of Remaliah [protected by Jehovah] over Israel [the symbolic name of Jacob, and his descendants], Jotham [Jehovah is perfect] son of Uzziah [my strength is Jehovah] became king [royal person, ruler] of Judah [the tribe descended from Judah, son of Jacob]. word study 33 He was twenty-five [a son of twenty and five] years old when he became [began to reign, started ruling] king, and he reigned [ruled, exercised royal authority] in Jerusalem [the city of peace, the capital city] sixteen [six and ten] years. His mother’s [female parent, maternal figure] name was Jerusha [daughter of the righteous one, descendant of Zadok] daughter of Zadok [a high priest, a righteous leader]. word study 34 And he did what was right [just, upright, having integrity] in the eyes [sight, perception, understanding] of the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God], just as his father [parent, ancestor, spiritual leader] Uzziah [my strength is Jehovah] had done [accomplished, fulfilled, carried out]. word study 35 Nevertheless, the high places [cultic platforms, elevations] were not taken away; the people [nation, community] continued sacrificing [offering, slaughtering] and burning incense [making perfume, worshiping] there. Jotham rebuilt [established, repaired] the Upper Gate [higher doorway, main entrance] of the house [temple, dwelling place] of the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God]. word study 36 As for the rest [remainder, what is left] of the acts [accomplishments, deeds] of Jotham [Jehovah is perfect], along with his accomplishments [all that he did], are they not [is it not the case] written [recorded, inscribed] in the Book [scroll, written document] of the Chronicles [events, history] of the Kings [rulers, monarchs] of Judah [the tribe of Judah, the region]? word study 37 (In those days [a period of time, an era] the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] began [to initiate, to start] to send [to dispatch, to commission] Rezin [meaning firm] king [a ruler, a monarch] of Aram [Syria, a region] and Pekah [a king of Israel] son [a descendant, an offspring] of Remaliah [protected by Jehovah] against Judah.) word study 38 And Jotham [slept with his fathers, died] rested [lay down, had sexual relations] with his fathers and was buried [interred, laid to rest] with them in the City [town, settlement] of David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] his father [ancestor, progenitor]. And his son [descendant, offspring] Ahaz [meaning’he has grasped’ or’God has grasped’] reigned [ruled, advised] in his place [stead, position]. word study
