Genesis 4
BSA1 And Adam [the first human, created by God] had relations [knew, was intimate with] with his wife Eve [the mother of all living], and she conceived [became pregnant, was with child] and gave birth [brought forth, delivered] to Cain [the firstborn son]. “With the help [assistance, aid] of the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] I have brought forth [gotten, acquired] a man [a male child, a son],” she said. word study 2 Later she gave birth [again, a second time] to Cain’s brother [male sibling, relative] Abel [breath]. Now Abel was a keeper [tender, caregiver] of sheep [flock, livestock], while Cain was a tiller [worker, servant] of the soil [ground, land, earth]. word study 3 So in the course of time [after many days, at the end of days], Cain [the first child of Adam and Eve] brought some of the fruit [produce, crops] of the soil [land, earth, ground] as an offering [gift, sacrifice] to the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God], word study 4 while Abel [the son of Adam, breath] brought the best portions [the fatty parts, the choicest] of the firstborn [the birthright, the firstlings] of his flock [sheep, the young lambs]. And the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord God] looked with favor [had respect, was pleased] on Abel [the righteous one] and his offering [the gift, the sacrifice], word study 5 but He had no regard [did not respect, was not pleased with] for Cain [the first murderer, son of Adam] and his offering [gift, sacrifice]. So Cain became very angry [incensed, exceedingly wroth], and his countenance [face, presence] fell [was cast down, looked dejected]. word study 6 “Why [for what reason, what is the cause] are you angry [incensed, furious],” said the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] to Cain [the first murderer], “and why [what is the reason] has your countenance [face, presence] fallen [dropped, cast down]? word study 7 If you do what is right [act justly, pleasing to God], will you not be accepted [received with favor, lifted up]? But if you refuse to do what is right [choose not to act justly], sin [transgression, rebellion] is crouching [lying in wait, lurking] at your door [entrance, threshold]; it desires [longs for, has affection for] you, but you must master [rule over, have dominion over] it.” word study 8 Then Cain [the first murderer] said to his brother [male sibling, close relative] Abel, “Let us go out to the field [a flat area of land, open country].” And while they were in the field [countryside, rural area], Cain rose up [stood up, attacked] against his brother Abel and killed [slew, put to death] him. word study 9 And the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] said to Cain [the first murderer], “Where [in what location, how] is your brother [male sibling, close relative] Abel [breath, a fleeting life]?” “I do not know [I have no knowledge, I am unaware]!” he answered. “Am I [is it my responsibility, should I be] my brother’s keeper [guardian, protector, caretaker]?” word study 10 “What [in the world] have you done [to make, to bring about]?” replied the LORD [Yehovah, the divine Judge]. “The voice [sound, cry] of your brother’s [male sibling, close relative] blood [life] cries out [to cry, to shout] to Me from the ground [earth, land, soil]. word study 11 Now [at this time, from this moment] you are cursed [utterly doomed, under divine judgment] and banished [expelled, driven out] from the ground [land, earth, soil], which has opened [to receive, to swallow up] its mouth [lip, edge] to receive your brother’s [relative, sibling, kin] blood [life force, vital fluid] from your hand [power, strength, direction]. word study 12 When you till [cultivate, work] the ground [land, earth], it will no longer yield [give, produce] its produce [fruit, crops] to you. You will be a fugitive [vagabond, wanderer] and a wanderer [one who roams, a vagabond] on the earth [land, the world].” word study 13 But Cain [the first murderer, son of Adam] said to the LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God], “My punishment [iniquity, moral evil] is greater [more severe, heavier] than I can bear [endure, lift]. word study 14 Behold [look, take notice], this day [at this very moment, from now on] You have driven me [expelled, cast out] from the face [presence, sight] of the earth [land, ground], and from Your face [presence, countenance] I will be hidden [concealed, veiled]; I will be a fugitive [vagabond, wanderer] and a wanderer [nomad, vagrant] on the earth [land, world], and whoever finds me [discovers, encounters] will kill me [slay, destroy].” word study 15 “Not so [certainly not, by no means]!” replied the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God]. “If anyone [whoever, any person] slays [kills, murders] Cain, then Cain will be avenged [punished, requited] sevenfold [seven times, abundantly].” And the LORD [the Lord God, Yehovah] placed [set, appointed] a mark [sign, token] on Cain, so that no one [anyone, whoever] who found [discovered, encountered] him would kill [slay, strike] him. word study 16 So Cain [the first murderer, son of Adam] went out [to come out, to depart] from the presence [face, before] of the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord God] and settled [to dwell, to remain] in the land [earth, territory] of Nod [a land of exile, wandering], east [on the east side, toward the rising sun] of Eden [the garden of pleasure, paradise]. word study 17 And Cain [knew, was intimate with] had relations with his wife, and she conceived [became pregnant, with child] and gave birth [beget, brought forth] to Enoch [dedicated, a gift from God]. Then Cain [the first murderer, a wanderer] built [constructed, established] a city [a place of settlement, with walls and governance] and named it [called, designated] after his son [child, descendant] Enoch. word study 18 Now to Enoch [dedicated, a son of Cain] was born Irad [a descendant of Cain], and Irad was the father of Mehujael [smitten by God], and Mehujael was the father of Methusael [man of God, a gift from God], and Methusael was the father of Lamech [a strong and vigorous man, powerful]. word study 19 And Lamech [took unto him] married two [a pair, a duo] women [wives, female companions], one [the first, the initial] named [designated, called] Adah [a woman of beauty, a mother] and the other [the second, the subsequent] Zillah [a woman of shade, a shadow]. word study 20 Adah [Lamech’s wife, a mother in the early descendants of Cain] gave birth [to beget, as a mother] to Jabal [the son of Lamech and Adah]; he was the father [a paternal ancestor, founder of a lineage] of those who dwell [to sit, remain, or abide] in tents [nomadic homes, portable shelters] and raise [to care for, possess] livestock [cattle, sheep, or goats, domestic animals]. word study 21 And his brother’s [male sibling, close relative] name was Jubal [inventor of musical instruments]; he was the father [originator, ancestor] of all [every single one] who play [handle, skillfully use] the harp [lyre, stringed instrument] and flute [pipe, wind instrument]. word study 22 And Zillah gave birth [bore a son, became a mother] to Tubal-cain [a skilled craftsman, instructor of every artificer], a forger [one who hammers out, sharpens] of every implement [cutting instrument, tool] of bronze [copper, a base metal] and iron [a strong, harsh metal]. And the sister [close relative, female sibling] of Tubal-cain was Naamah [a woman of pleasantness, loveliness]. word study 23 Then Lamech [a descendant of Cain] said to his wives: “Adah [his first wife] and Zillah [his second wife], hear [listen carefully, give attention to] my voice; wives of Lamech, listen [hearken, pay attention] to my speech. For I have slain [killed, murdered] a man for wounding [harming, injuring] me, a young man [youth, a boy] for striking [bruising, hurting] me. word study 24 If Cain [the first murderer, son of Adam] is avenged [punished, requited] sevenfold [seven times, in full measure], then Lamech [a descendant of Cain, a man before the Flood] seventy-sevenfold [seventy and seven times, abundantly more].” word study 25 And Adam [a second time] again had relations [knew, was intimate] with his wife, and she gave birth [bore, brought forth] to a son [a male child, a descendant] and named [called, designated] him Seth [appointed, given], saying, “God [Elohim, the supreme God] has granted [appointed, given] me another [different, additional] seed [offspring, descendant] in place of [instead of, in exchange for] Abel [breath, a fleeting life], since [because, for the reason that] Cain [the first murderer] killed [slew, murdered] him.” word study 26 And to Seth [even] also a son [descendant, offspring] was born, and he called him Enosh [a man, mortal]. At that time [then, in those days] men began to call upon [invoke, worship] the name [identity, character] of the LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God]. word study
