Isaiah 63
BSA1 Who is this coming [coming in triumph] from Edom [the region of conflict], from Bozrah [the town of sheepfolds] with crimson-stained [dyed, blood-red] garments? Who is this [glorious in appearance] robed in splendor [majestic apparel], marching [travelling, walking] in the greatness [abundance, mighty power] of His strength [power, might]? “It is I [Yehovah], proclaiming [speaking, declaring] vindication [righteousness, justice], mighty [powerful, able] to save [rescue, deliver].” word study 2 Why [for what reason] are Your clothes [garments, apparel] red [ruddy], and Your garments [robe, clothing] like one who treads [walks on] the winepress [wine vat, press] [a container for squeezing grapes]? word study 3 “I have trodden [crushed, trampled] the winepress [device for crushing grapes] alone [by myself, without help], and no one from the nations [Gentiles, peoples] was with Me. I trampled [tread down, subdued] them in My anger [indignation, wrath] and trod them down [trampled, crushed] in My fury [rage, intense anger]; their blood [lifeblood, vital force] spattered [sprinkled, splashed] My garments [clothing, robes], and all My clothes [raiment, attire] were stained [defiled, polluted]. word study 4 For [because of this reason] the day [a period of time, a season] of vengeance [punishment, revenge] was in My heart [the center of feelings, will, and intellect], and the year [a period of twelve months, a span of time] of My redemption [the act of buying back, freeing from bondage] had come [arrived, reached its fulfillment]. word study 5 I looked [closely, with attention], but there was no one to help [assist, aid]; I was appalled [amazed, shocked] that no one assisted [supported, upheld]. So My arm [the arm as stretched out; strength, might, power] brought Me salvation [deliverance, rescue], and My own wrath [intense anger, rage] upheld [supported, sustained] Me. word study 6 I trampled [trod down, crushed under my feet] the nations [peoples, countries] in My anger [wrath, intense fury]; in My wrath [rage, burning indignation] I made them drunk [intoxicated, staggering like drunk men] and poured out their blood [lifeblood] on the ground [land, earth, the soil].” word study 7 I will make known the LORD’s [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] loving devotion [kindness, mercy, or pity] and His praiseworthy acts [great goodness, faithful love], because of all [everything] that the LORD has done for us— the many [abundant, numerous] good things [beautiful, gladness] for the house [dwelling place, family] of Israel [Jacob’s descendants] according to His great [abundant, infinite] compassion [tender love, womb] and loving devotion [kindness, mercy]. word study 8 For He said, “They are surely [certainly, without a doubt] My people, sons [children, descendants] who will not be disloyal [deceptive, unfaithful, lie].” So He became their Savior [Rescuer, Deliverer, to save from trouble]. word study 9 In all [every, each] their distress [affliction, trouble], He too was afflicted [suffered with them, troubled], and the Angel [messenger] of His Presence [face, being] saved them. In His love [affection, tender care] and compassion [mercy, pity] He redeemed [bought back, freed] them; He lifted [bore, carried] them up and carried [sustained, supported] them all [every] the days [time, ages] of old [long ago, forever]. word study 10 But they [as a group of men] rebelled [resisted authority, disobeyed] and grieved [hurt, caused pain to] His Holy [set-apart, sacred] Spirit [the breath of life, divine presence]. So He turned [overturned, changed completely] and became their enemy [adversary, one who opposes], and He Himself [personally, as the one responsible] fought [engaged in battle, struggled against] against them. word study 11 Then His people [the nation of Israel, His chosen ones] remembered [thought back to, recalled] the days [epochs, periods of time] of old [ancient times, forever], the days [times, eras] of Moses [the Israelite leader, prophet]. Where [in what place, what location] is He who brought [led, guided] them through [across, over] the sea [the Red Sea] with [accompanied by, together with] the shepherds [leaders, guides] of His flock [His people, the nation]? Where [in what place, what location] is the One who set [placed, established] His Holy [set apart, sacred] Spirit [the divine breath, the giver of life] among [in the midst of, within] them, word study 12 who sent His glorious [beautiful, full of honor] arm [the arm as stretched out; strength, might, power] to lead them by the right hand [in a position of guidance and authority] of Moses [the Israelite leader, born to Amram and Jochebed], who divided [to break up or open] the waters [a source of refreshment, or a barrier] before them to gain [to make or do, to accomplish] for Himself everlasting [lasting an eternity, forever] renown [a name; fame, reputation], word study 13 who led them through the [abyss, deep waters] depths like a [chariot] horse [or swallow] in the [desert, open field] wilderness, so that they did [not falter, stumble] not stumble? word study 14 Like cattle [or a beast, as a quadruped mammal] going down [descending, to a lower place] to the valley [a low area of land, a plain], the Spirit [the breath of life, the wind, or a person’s mind and emotions] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] gave them rest [to settle down, to remain in one place]. You led [guided, directed] Your people [Amaw, a nation, a group of people] this way [thus, in this manner] to make [to do, to create] for Yourself a glorious [beautiful, honorable] name [a person’s identity, honor, and character]. word study 15 Look down [from your heavenly throne] from heaven and see, from Your holy [set-apart, sacred] and glorious [beautiful, majestic] habitation [lofty abode, exalted dwelling]. Where are Your zeal [passionate love, jealousy] and might [strength, power]? Your yearning [deep feeling, compassion] and compassion [tender love, mercy] for me are restrained [held back, abstained]. word study 16 Yet You [our eternal Father] are our Father, though Abraham [the patriarch of faith] does not know us and Israel [God’s chosen people] does not acknowledge [recognize or treat as family] us. You, O LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God], are our Father; our Redeemer [Kinsman, the one who buys back] from Everlasting [all eternity, forever] is Your name [Your character and reputation]. word study 17 Why, O LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God], do You make us stray [to go astray, wander] from Your ways [path, manner of life] and harden [make unfeeling, stubborn] our hearts [inner being, will] from fearing [revering, respecting] You? Return [turn back, come back], for the sake [because, for the purpose] of Your servants [those who serve, attend], the tribes [clans, families] of Your heritage [inheritance, possession]. word study 18 For a [brief] short while Your people [holy nation, set-apart ones] possessed [took control of, occupied] Your holy place [sacred temple, sanctuary], but our enemies [adversaries, those who oppose] have trampled [trod down, despised] Your sanctuary [holy dwelling, sacred space]. word study 19 We have become [as in the beginning, from ancient times] like those You [as our sovereign Lord] never ruled [exercised dominion over], like those not called [identified, named] by Your name [Your character, reputation]. word study
