Job 40
BSA1 And the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] said [to speak, command, or utter] to Job [the patriarch famous for his patience]: word study 2 “Will the faultfinder [one who reproves] contend [strive, argue] with the Almighty [Shadday, all-powerful One]? Let him who argues [cavils, disputes] with God [Eloah, the one true Deity] give an answer [respond, provide a reply].” word study 3 Then Job [the patriarch, a man of great patience] answered [replied, responded to] the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God]: word study 4 “Behold [look, see], I am insignificant [vile, of small account, worthless]. How can I reply [answer, return] to You? I place [set, lay] my hand [an open hand; strength, a side or share] over my mouth [lips, edge of speech]. word study 5 I have spoken once [a single time], but I have no answer [will not respond, have nothing to say]— twice [a second time, again], but I have nothing [will proceed no further, add no more] to add [say, speak].” word study 6 Then the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] answered [to respond, to sing or make music] Job [the patriarch famous for his patience] out of the whirlwind [a strong storm or hurricane, a tempest] and said [to speak, to command, to promise]: word study 7 “Now brace [strengthen, prepare] yourself like a man; I will question [demand, inquire of] you, and you shall inform [declare, make known to] Me [as your Lord, the all-knowing One]. word study 8 Would you really [completely, utterly] annul [make void, frustrate] My justice [righteous judgment]? Would you condemn [declare guilty, be wicked] Me to justify [make righteous, declare innocent] yourself [to vindicate your own actions]? word study 9 Do you have an arm [the arm as stretched out; strength, might, power] like God’s [the supreme Almighty]? Can you thunder [with a voice of authority, making a loud rumbling sound] with a voice [a sound or utterance, like the sound of a person speaking] like His [having the same power and majesty]? word study 10 Then adorn [deck, put on] yourself with majesty [excellency, pride] and splendor [glory, beauty], and clothe [array, wrap] yourself with honor [dignity, beauty] and glory [majesty, splendor]. word study 11 Unleash [pour forth, scatter abroad] the fury [outburst of passion, rage] of your wrath [anger]; look on [see, behold, gaze upon] every [all, everything] proud [arrogant, lofty] man and bring [abase, humble] him low [to a state of humility, submission]. word study 12 Look [gaze upon, regard with attention] on every proud [arrogant, lofty] man and humble [bring low, bend the knee] him; trample [tread down, crush] the wicked [morally wrong, guilty] where they stand [in their place, underneath]. word study 13 Bury [hide, conceal] them together [in unity, as one] in the dust [dry earth, clay]; imprison [bind, tie] them in the grave [secret place, hidden underground, place of the dead]. word study 14 Then I [even I, personally] will confess [give thanks, praise] to you that your own [personal, inherent] right hand [strength, ability] can save [deliver, rescue] you [from danger, trouble]. word study 15 Look [behold, consider] at Behemoth [a large water animal, possibly a hippopotamus], which I made [created, formed] along with you [together, as your counterpart]. He feeds [eats, devours] on grass [plants, vegetation] like [similar to, in the manner of] an ox [cattle, a domesticated animal]. word study 16 See [behold, look] the strength [power, might] of his loins [waist, hips] and the power [force, ability] in the muscles [sinews, tendons] of his belly [abdomen, stomach]. word study 17 His tail [curving, bending down] sways like [resembling, similar to] a cedar [a cedar tree, strong and durable]; the sinews [tendons, connecting muscles to bones] of his thighs [source of power, vulnerability] are tightly [closely, firmly] knit [intertwined, wrapped together]. word study 18 His bones [strong pieces of brass, tubes] are tubes of bronze [copper or bronze, a strong metal]; his limbs [legs, body parts] are rods [bars, strong sticks] of iron [a strong metal]. word study 19 He [the chief, foremost creature] is the foremost [beginning, first] of God’s [Elohim, the supreme Creator] works [creations, mighty deeds]; only his Maker [the one who made him, his Creator] can draw [approach, bring near] the sword [cutting instrument] against him [in opposition to him, to threaten]. word study 20 The hills [mountains, high places] yield him their produce [food, crops], while all [every, the entirety of] the beasts [living creatures, animals] of the field [land, wilderness] play [laugh, rejoice] nearby [there, in that place]. word study 21 He lies [rests, takes his repose] under the lotus plants [shady trees, under the water-plants], hidden [in secrecy, in a secret place] among the reeds [branches, tall reeds] of the marsh [swamp, fen, mire]. word study 22 The lotus plants [shady trees, covering with their shadow] conceal him in their shade [shadow, protection]; the willows [poplar trees, trees by the water] of the brook [stream, small river] surround [compass, turn about] him. word study 23 Though the river [a flood, overflowing waters] rages, Behemoth [a massive, powerful creature] is unafraid [not trembling, confident]; he remains secure [trusting, having faith], though the Jordan [the river running from Lebanon to the Dead Sea] surges [bursts forth, comes out] to his mouth [lip, edge]. word study 24 Can anyone [no one, shall any take] capture him as he looks on [with his eyes, watching], or pierce [with metal teeth, curse] his nose [face, countenance] with a snare [trap, device to catch]? word study
