1 Chronicles 13:13 Summary

This verse tells us that David decided not to move the ark of God to the City of David, but instead took it to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. This was because David was afraid of God after what had happened to Uzzah, and he wasn't sure how to properly bring the ark to him (as seen in 1 Chronicles 13:11-12). David's decision to wait and seek God's guidance is a great example for us to follow, as it shows that sometimes it's better to wait and trust in God's plan, rather than rushing into something that may not be in line with His will (as encouraged in Proverbs 3:5-6). By waiting on God, we can trust that He will guide us and provide for us, just like He blessed Obed-edom's household after the ark was taken to his house.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did David decide not to move the ark to the City of David?

David decided not to move the ark to the City of David because he feared God after the LORD had burst forth against Uzzah, as seen in 1 Chronicles 13:11, and he was unsure how to properly bring the ark to him, as mentioned in 1 Chronicles 13:12.

Who was Obed-edom the Gittite and why was the ark taken to his house?

Obed-edom the Gittite was a man whose house the ark of God was taken to, as stated in 1 Chronicles 13:13, and it is believed that he was a Levite or a worshiper of God, and the ark was taken to his house as a temporary dwelling place until David could figure out how to properly move it to the City of David.

What happened to the household of Obed-edom after the ark was taken to his house?

After the ark was taken to the house of Obed-edom, the LORD blessed his household and everything he owned, as stated in 1 Chronicles 13:14, which is reminiscent of the blessings promised in Deuteronomy 28:1-14 for those who obey and follow God.

What can we learn from David's decision to leave the ark at Obed-edom's house?

We can learn from David's decision that sometimes it is better to wait and seek God's guidance before taking action, rather than rushing into something that may not be in line with God's will, as seen in Proverbs 3:5-6, which encourages us to trust in the LORD and lean not on our own understanding.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some times in my life when I have had to wait on God's guidance before taking action, and how did I respond?
  2. How can I apply the principle of seeking God's guidance before taking action in my own life, especially in difficult or uncertain situations?
  3. What are some ways that I can show reverence and respect for God, as David did in this verse, and how can I cultivate a deeper fear of God in my own heart?
  4. How can I trust that God will bless and provide for me, even when I am unsure of what the future holds, just like Obed-edom's household was blessed after the ark was taken to his house?

Trapp's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 13:13

1 Chronicles 13:13 So David brought not the ark [home] to himself to the city of David, but carried it aside into the house of Obededom the Gittite. 1 Chronicles 13:14 And the ark of God remained with the family of Obededom in his house three months. And the LORD blessed the house of Obededom, and all that he had. Ver. 13,14.

Ellicott's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 13:13

(13) Brought not . . . home.—A different verb from that in 1 Chronicles 13:12. Literally, And David caused not the ark to turn aside unto himself. Slightly abridged. (See Samuel.) Obed-edom the Gittite.—As, according to 1 Chronicles 26:1-4, Obed-edom was a Korhitic Levite, the term “Gittite” is generally assumed to mean native of Gathrimmon, a Levitical township (Joshua 21:24) belonging to the great clan of Kohath, which was charged with the carriage of the Ark, and of which Obed-edom was a member (Numbers 4:15).

Cambridge Bible on 1 Chronicles 13:13

13. David brought not] R.V. David removed not. Obed-edom the Gittite] As Gittite means man of Gath, Obed-edom was doubtless of Philistine origin; perhaps he attached himself to David during David’s sojourn among the Philistines. In 1 Chronicles 15:18; 1 Chronicles 15:24; 1 Chronicles 16:38 an Obed-edom is mentioned who was a Levite and a porter (doorkeeper) for the ark, but the Chronicler does not identify him with the Gittite of the same name.
