1 1 Kings 5:6–10 Now therefore, order that cedars of Lebanon be cut down for me. My servants will be with your servants, and I will pay your servants whatever wages you set, for you know that there are none among us as skilled in logging as the Sidonians.” When Hiram received Solomon’s message, he rejoiced greatly and said, “Blessed be the LORD this day! He has given David a wise son over this great people!” Then Hiram sent a reply to Solomon, saying: “I have received your message; I will do all you desire regarding the cedar and cypress timber. My servants will haul the logs from Lebanon to the Sea, and I will float them as rafts by sea to the place you specify. There I will separate the logs, and you can take them away. And in exchange, you can meet my needs by providing my household with food.” So Hiram provided Solomon with all the cedar and cypress timber he wanted,
2 Ezra 3:7 They gave money to the masons and carpenters, and food and drink and oil to the people of Sidon and Tyre to bring cedar logs from Lebanon to Joppa by sea, as authorized by Cyrus king of Persia.
3 2 Chronicles 2:3 Then Solomon sent word to Hiram king of Tyre: “Do for me as you did for my father David when you sent him cedars to build himself a house to live in.

1 Chronicles 22:4 Summary

This verse tells us that the Sidonians and Tyrians brought a large quantity of cedar logs to David, which would be used to build the temple. This shows us that God can provide for us in amazing ways, just like He provided for David. As we read in Psalm 23:1, God is our Shepherd and provides for our needs, and as we see in 1 Chronicles 22:4, He can even use other people to bring us what we need. We can trust that God will provide for us, just as He provided for David, and we can be grateful for the resources and materials that He gives us to do His work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did the Sidonians and Tyrians bring cedar logs to David?

The Sidonians and Tyrians brought a large quantity of cedar logs to David as part of their trade and diplomatic relations, as seen in 1 Chronicles 22:4, which was a common practice in the ancient world, similar to the way King Hiram of Tyre provided cedar logs to Solomon for the construction of the temple, as mentioned in 1 Kings 5:10.

What was the significance of cedar logs in the construction of the temple?

Cedar logs were highly valued for their durability and resistance to decay, making them an ideal material for the construction of the temple, as mentioned in 1 Chronicles 22:4, and were also used in the construction of Solomon's palace, as seen in 1 Kings 7:2-3.

How did David's preparations for the temple reflect his heart for God?

David's preparations for the temple, including the gathering of materials such as cedar logs, as mentioned in 1 Chronicles 22:4, demonstrate his desire to honor God and provide a worthy place for worship, as expressed in his words in 1 Chronicles 22:5, and reflect his heart of humility and surrender, as seen in Psalm 138:8.

What can we learn from David's example of preparation and planning for the temple?

We can learn from David's example the importance of careful planning and preparation in our own lives, whether it be in our personal relationships, careers, or ministries, as emphasized in Proverbs 24:27, and the value of seeking to honor God in all that we do, as encouraged in Colossians 3:23-24.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some ways that I can prepare and plan for the work that God has called me to do, just as David prepared for the construction of the temple?
  2. How can I demonstrate my heart for God through my actions and preparations, just as David did in gathering materials for the temple?
  3. What are some things that I can do to honor God in my daily life, whether it be in my work, relationships, or personal devotions?
  4. In what ways can I show appreciation and gratitude for the resources and materials that God has provided for me, just as David acknowledged the provision of cedar logs from the Sidonians and Tyrians?

Ellicott's Commentary on 1 Chronicles 22:4

(4) Also cedar trees in abundance.—Literally, and beams or logs of cedars without number. A rhetorical exaggeration, like that which we have just noted. (See also 1 Chronicles 14:1.) The Zidonians and they of Tyra (i.e., the Phoenicians) brought much cedar wood—i.e., in the way of ordinary commerce, to barter them for supplies of grain, wine, oil, and other products of the soil, which their own rocky coast-land did not yield in sufficiency. (Comp. 1 Chronicles 14:1.) At a later time Hiram entered into an express contract with Solomon to supply the cedar and other materials required for building the Temple (1 Kings 5:8-11).
