1 Samuel 28:8 Summary
[In this verse, Saul is trying to get help from a medium, which is someone who claims to talk to spirits, because he is not hearing from God. This shows that Saul has turned away from seeking God's guidance and is instead seeking help from other sources. As seen in 1 Samuel 28:6, God was not answering Saul's prayers, and Saul was desperate for guidance. This should remind us to always seek God first and to trust in His sovereignty and provision, as seen in Psalm 119:105 and Proverbs 3:5-6.]
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Saul disguise himself before visiting the medium?
Saul disguised himself because he knew that he had previously killed mediums and spiritists in the land, and he did not want the woman to recognize him and refuse to help him, as seen in 1 Samuel 28:9, where the woman expresses her fear of being killed for her actions.
What does it mean to 'consult a spirit' in this verse?
In 1 Samuel 28:8, consulting a spirit refers to the practice of seeking guidance or information from the spirit world, which is forbidden by God in Deuteronomy 18:10-12, and is a form of divination that seeks knowledge apart from God's revelation.
Is it ever acceptable for a believer to seek guidance from mediums or spiritists?
No, according to the Bible, seeking guidance from mediums or spiritists is never acceptable for a believer, as it is considered a form of idolatry and a rejection of God's sovereignty, as seen in Leviticus 19:31 and Isaiah 8:19-20.
How does this verse relate to Saul's relationship with God?
This verse shows that Saul had turned away from seeking God's guidance and was instead seeking help from other sources, which is a result of his disobedience and lack of faith, as seen in 1 Samuel 28:6, where it is stated that God did not answer him by dreams or Urim or prophets.
