2 Chronicles 20:36 Summary

In 2 Chronicles 20:36, Jehoshaphat and Ahaziah agreed to build ships to sail to Tarshish, but this decision ultimately led to failure and disaster, as seen in 2 Chronicles 20:37. This verse teaches us the importance of seeking God's guidance and wisdom in all our decisions, as seen in Proverbs 3:5-6, and being careful about the company we keep and the alliances we form, as warned in 1 Corinthians 15:33. By trusting in God's sovereignty and providence, we can avoid making mistakes and instead follow His plan for our lives, as seen in Jeremiah 29:11. As we reflect on this verse, let's remember to prioritize our relationship with God and seek His guidance in all we do, as seen in Psalm 119:105.

Frequently Asked Questions

What was the purpose of the ships that Jehoshaphat and Ahaziah agreed to build in 2 Chronicles 20:36?

The purpose of the ships was to sail to Tarshish, likely for trade or commerce, as seen in other biblical accounts such as Psalm 72:10 and Isaiah 60:9, which mention Tarshish as a place of wealth and trade.

Why did Jehoshaphat form an alliance with Ahaziah, the king of Israel, in 2 Chronicles 20:35-36?

The Bible does not give a clear reason for Jehoshaphat's alliance with Ahaziah, but it is clear that Ahaziah 'acted wickedly' (2 Chronicles 20:35), which may have been a poor decision on Jehoshaphat's part, as warned against in 2 Corinthians 6:14-16.

What was the outcome of the shipbuilding project in 2 Chronicles 20:36-37?

The ships were wrecked and unable to sail to Tarshish, as prophesied by Eliezer son of Dodavahu, because of Jehoshaphat's alliance with Ahaziah, which was seen as a disobedience to God, similar to the consequences seen in other biblical accounts such as Hosea 8:7.

What can we learn from Jehoshaphat's decision to form an alliance with Ahaziah in 2 Chronicles 20:35-36?

We can learn the importance of being careful about the company we keep and the alliances we form, as warned in 1 Corinthians 15:33 and Proverbs 22:24-25, and to seek God's guidance in all our decisions, as seen in Proverbs 3:5-6.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some alliances or relationships in my life that may be hindering my walk with God, and how can I seek His guidance in navigating these situations, as seen in Psalm 119:105?
  2. How can I apply the lesson of 2 Chronicles 20:36 to my own life, in terms of being careful about the company I keep and the decisions I make, as warned in 1 Corinthians 15:33?
  3. What are some ways that I can seek God's guidance and wisdom in my decision-making, as seen in Proverbs 3:5-6 and James 1:5-8?
  4. How can I trust God's sovereignty and providence, even when my plans and projects seem to be wrecked or unsuccessful, as seen in Romans 8:28 and Psalm 138:8?

Ellicott's Commentary on 2 Chronicles 20:36

(36) And he joined himself with him.—Literally, and he joined him with himself, an expression only occurring here. To make ships to go to Tarshish.—In 1 Kings 22:48-49, we read: “Jehoshaphat made ships (i.e., a fleet) of Tarshish, to go to Ophir for gold; and it went not; for the ships were broken (i.e., wrecked) in Ezion-geber. Then said Ahaziah the son of Ahab unto Jehoshaphat, Let my servants go with thy servants in the ships; and Jehoshaphat consented not.” There is no mention of a previous alliance and partnership in the ship-building with Ahaziah. Moreover, the expression of our text, “ships to go to Tarshish,” appears to be an erroneous paraphrase of “ships of Tarshish,” or “Tarshish-men,” as we might say; a phrase which really means, vessels built for long sea-voyages. According to Kings, the ships were built “to go to Ophir for gold;” in other words, to renew Solomon’s traffic with India from the port on the Red Sea. And they made the ships in Ezion-gaber.—The Edomite port at the head of the Gulf of Akaba. If Tarshish means the Phoenician Tartessus in Spain, the fleet could only go thither by doubling the Cape, or crossing the Isthmus of Suez. Therefore some have supposed another Tarshish somewhere in the Persian Gulf or on the north-west coast of India. (See on 2 Chronicles 9:21.)

36. ships to go to Tarshish] In Kings, ships of Tarshish to go to Ophir: cp. 2 Chronicles 9:21 (= 1 Kings 10:22), note. In both passages the reading of Kings, “ships (or ‘navy’) of Tarshish,” i.e. large sea-going ships (cp. Psalms 48:7) is to be preferred, because (1) Ezion-geber was a port for vessels sailing eastward, while Tarshish was in the west, (2) gold, the object of the voyage (cp. 1 Kings 22:48), came from Ophir (2 Chronicles 8:18; 1 Kings 9:28; 1 Kings 10:11; Psalms 45:9).
