Context — Jehoash Defeats Amaziah
17Then Amaziah king of Judah took counsel and sent word to the king of Israel Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu. “Come, let us meet face to face,” he said.
18But Jehoash king of Israel replied to Amaziah king of Judah: “A thistle in Lebanon sent a message to a cedar in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son in marriage.’ Then a wild beast in Lebanon came along and trampled the thistle. 19You have said, ‘Look, I have defeated Edom,’ and your heart has become proud and boastful. Now stay at home. Why should you stir up trouble so that you fall—you and Judah with you?”Cross References

| 1 | 2 Kings 14:8–14 | Then Amaziah sent messengers to the king of Israel Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu. “Come, let us meet face to face,” he said. But Jehoash king of Israel replied to Amaziah king of Judah: “A thistle in Lebanon sent a message to a cedar in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son in marriage.’ Then a wild beast in Lebanon came along and trampled the thistle. You have indeed defeated Edom, and your heart has become proud. Glory in that and stay at home. Why should you stir up trouble so that you fall—you and Judah with you?” But Amaziah would not listen, and Jehoash king of Israel advanced. He and King Amaziah of Judah faced each other at Beth-shemesh in Judah. And Judah was routed before Israel, and every man fled to his home. There at Beth-shemesh, Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Ahaziah. Then Jehoash went to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate—a section of four hundred cubits. He took all the gold and silver and all the articles found in the house of the LORD and in the treasuries of the royal palace, as well as some hostages. Then he returned to Samaria. |
| 2 | 2 Chronicles 25:13 | Meanwhile the troops that Amaziah had dismissed from battle raided the cities of Judah, from Samaria to Beth-horon. They struck down 3,000 people and carried off a great deal of plunder. |

2 Chronicles 25:17 Summary
[This verse shows how Amaziah king of Judah wanted to meet with Jehoash king of Israel, likely to boast about his recent victory or to discuss an alliance. However, God had already determined to destroy Amaziah because of his idolatry, as seen in 2 Chronicles 25:15-16. This teaches us the importance of seeking God's counsel and guidance, rather than relying on our own strength or the advice of others, as encouraged in Proverbs 3:5-6. By prioritizing God's guidance, we can avoid the pitfalls of pride and boastfulness, and instead cultivate humility and wisdom, as seen in 1 Peter 5:6-7.]
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Amaziah king of Judah want to meet with Jehoash king of Israel face to face?
Amaziah likely wanted to meet with Jehoash to discuss a potential alliance or to boast about his recent victory over Edom, as seen in 2 Chronicles 25:11-13, but God had already determined to destroy him because of his idolatry, as mentioned in 2 Chronicles 25:15-16.
What can we learn from Amaziah's decision to ignore the prophet's warning and meet with Jehoash instead?
We can learn that ignoring God's warnings and advice can lead to serious consequences, as seen in Proverbs 29:1, and that we should always prioritize seeking God's counsel and guidance, as encouraged in Proverbs 3:5-6.
How does this verse relate to the concept of pride and humility in the Bible?
This verse shows how Amaziah's pride and boastfulness led him to make unwise decisions, which is a common theme in the Bible, as seen in Proverbs 16:18 and 1 Peter 5:6-7, where humility is encouraged as a virtue.
What can we infer about the relationship between Judah and Israel at this time in history?
We can infer that the relationship between Judah and Israel was likely tense, given the response of Jehoash king of Israel in 2 Chronicles 25:18-19, and that there may have been a history of conflict or competition between the two kingdoms, as mentioned in 1 Kings 12:1-33 and 2 Chronicles 13:1-20.
