6For our fathers were unfaithful and did evil in the sight of the LORD our God. They abandoned Him, turned their faces away from the dwelling place of the LORD, and turned their backs on Him. 7They also shut the doors of the portico and extinguished the lamps. They did not burn incense or present burnt offerings in the Holy Place of the God of Israel.Cross References

| 3 | 2 Chronicles 34:3–8 | In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, Josiah began to seek the God of his father David, and in the twelfth year he began to cleanse Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the Asherah poles, the carved idols, and the cast images. Then in his presence the altars of the Baals were torn down, and he cut to pieces the incense altars that were above them. He shattered the Asherah poles, the carved idols, and the cast images, crushed them to dust, and scattered them over the graves of those who had sacrificed to them. Then he burned the bones of the priests on their altars. So he cleansed Judah and Jerusalem. Josiah did the same in the cities of Manasseh, Ephraim, and Simeon, as far as Naphtali, and in the ruins around them. He tore down the altars and Asherah poles, crushed the idols to powder, and cut to pieces all the incense altars throughout the land of Israel. Then he returned to Jerusalem. Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, in order to cleanse the land and the temple, Josiah sent Shaphan son of Azaliah, Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah son of Joahaz, the recorder, to repair the house of the LORD his God. |

Before them stood seventy elders of the house of Israel, with Jaazaniah son of Shaphan standing among them. Each had a censer in his hand, and a fragrant cloud of incense was rising. “Son of man,” He said to me, “do you see what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the darkness, each at the shrine of his own idol? For they are saying, ‘The LORD does not see us; the LORD has forsaken the land.’” Again, He told me, “You will see them committing even greater abominations.” Then He brought me to the entrance of the north gate of the house of the LORD, and I saw women sitting there, weeping for Tammuz. “Son of man,” He said to me, “do you see this? Yet you will see even greater abominations than these.” So He brought me to the inner court of the house of the LORD, and there at the entrance to the temple of the LORD, between the portico and the altar, were about twenty-five men with their backs to the temple of the LORD and their faces toward the east; and they were bowing to the east in worship of the sun. “Son of man,” He said to me, “do you see this? Is it not enough for the house of Judah to commit the abominations they are practicing here, that they must also fill the land with violence and continually provoke Me to anger? Look, they are even putting the branch to their nose! Therefore I will respond with wrath. I will not look on them with pity, nor will I spare them. 2 Chronicles 29:5 Summary
In 2 Chronicles 29:5, Hezekiah is calling the Levites to purify themselves and the temple, making it a holy place for God to dwell. This means they had to get rid of anything that was sinful or unclean, just like we need to get rid of sin in our own lives, as seen in Psalm 51:7. Hezekiah wants the Levites to be set apart for God's service, and we are also called to live a life of holiness, as stated in 1 Peter 1:15-16. By following Hezekiah's example, we can make our own hearts and lives a welcoming place for God's presence, just like the temple was meant to be.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to consecrate oneself?
To consecrate oneself means to set oneself apart for God's service, making oneself holy and pure, as seen in Leviticus 20:7-8, and being dedicated to follow God's will and commands, like in Romans 12:1-2.
Why did Hezekiah ask the Levites to remove every impurity from the Holy Place?
Hezekiah asked the Levites to remove every impurity from the Holy Place because the presence of God is holy and cannot coexist with sin or uncleanness, as stated in Isaiah 6:3-5 and Revelation 21:27.
How does this verse relate to our personal lives as believers?
This verse reminds us that, as believers, we are called to live a life of holiness and purity, separate from the world, as stated in 2 Corinthians 6:17-18, and to regularly examine and cleanse our hearts and lives from any impurity, as encouraged in 1 John 1:9.
What is the significance of the house of the LORD in this verse?
The house of the LORD refers to the temple in Jerusalem, which was the central place of worship for the Israelites, as described in 1 Kings 8:1-66, and it symbolizes God's dwelling place among His people, as seen in Psalm 132:13-14.
