Context — Hezekiah Celebrates the Passover
17Since there were many in the assembly who had not consecrated themselves, the Levites were in charge of slaughtering the Passover lambs for every unclean person to consecrate the lambs to the LORD.
18A large number of the people—many from Ephraim, Manasseh, Issachar, and Zebulun—had not purified themselves, yet they ate the Passover, contrary to what was written. But Hezekiah interceded for them, saying, “May the LORD, who is good, provide atonement for everyone 19who sets his heart on seeking God—the LORD, the God of his fathers—even if he is not cleansed according to the purification rules of the sanctuary.”Cross References

| 1 | 2 Chronicles 29:34 | However, since there were not enough priests to skin all the burnt offerings, their Levite brothers helped them until the work was finished and until the priests had been consecrated. For the Levites had been more diligent in consecrating themselves than the priests had been. |
| 2 | 2 Chronicles 35:3–6 | To the Levites who taught all Israel and were holy to the LORD, Josiah said: “Put the holy ark in the temple built by Solomon son of David king of Israel. It is not to be carried around on your shoulders. Now serve the LORD your God and His people Israel. Prepare yourselves by families in your divisions, according to the instructions written by David king of Israel and Solomon his son. Moreover, stand in the Holy Place by the divisions of the families of your kinsmen the lay people, and by the divisions of the families of the Levites. Slaughter the Passover lambs, consecrate yourselves, and make preparations for your fellow countrymen to carry out the word of the LORD given by Moses.” |

2 Chronicles 30:17 Summary
[This verse shows that the Levites helped people who were not ritually clean to still participate in the Passover, which is a symbol of God's forgiveness and love, as seen in Exodus 12:1-28 and John 1:29. The Levites' actions demonstrate God's heart of compassion and mercy towards those who are not yet perfect, as supported by Psalm 103:8-14. We can learn from this that even in our imperfections, God still desires to have a relationship with us and provide atonement for our sins, as seen in Romans 3:25. By setting ourselves apart for God's service and seeking His forgiveness, we can experience His love and mercy, just like the people in 2 Chronicles 30:17-19.]
Frequently Asked Questions
Why were the Levites in charge of slaughtering the Passover lambs for unclean people?
The Levites were in charge because many in the assembly had not consecrated themselves, and the Levites were responsible for ensuring the ritual was performed correctly, as seen in 2 Chronicles 30:17 and supported by the Law of Moses in Exodus 12:1-28.
What does it mean to 'consecrate themselves' in this context?
To consecrate themselves means to set themselves apart for God's service and make themselves ritually clean, as commanded in Leviticus 20:7-8 and Numbers 19:1-10, so they could participate in the Passover.
How does this verse relate to the concept of atonement?
This verse shows that even though many people were not ritually clean, the Levites' actions and Hezekiah's intercession in 2 Chronicles 30:18-19 provided a way for them to still participate in the Passover and seek God's forgiveness, highlighting the importance of atonement as seen in Leviticus 16:1-34 and Romans 3:25.
What can we learn from the fact that many people had not purified themselves?
We can learn that even in our imperfections and mistakes, God still desires to have a relationship with us, as seen in 2 Chronicles 30:17-19 and supported by Psalm 103:8-14, which emphasizes God's compassion and mercy towards those who seek Him.
