Context — Jehu Kills the Priests of Baal
18Then Jehu brought all the people together and said, “Ahab served Baal a little, but Jehu will serve him a lot.
19Now, therefore, summon to me all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests. See that no one is missing, for I have a great sacrifice for Baal. Whoever is missing will not live.” But Jehu was acting deceptively in order to destroy the servants of Baal. 20And Jehu commanded, “Proclaim a solemn assembly for Baal.” So they announced it.Cross References

2 Kings 10:18 Summary
[Jehu was tricking the people who worshipped Baal, so he could gather them together and destroy them, because God had told him to get rid of the false gods, as we see in 2 Kings 10:17. This shows us that sometimes we have to be clever and strategic to do what God wants us to do, like it says in Proverbs 22:3. Jehu's plan was to pretend to serve Baal, but really he was going to destroy the people who worshipped him, which is similar to how God told the Israelites to destroy the idols and altars of foreign gods in Deuteronomy 12:3. We can learn from Jehu's example to be wise and clever in our own lives, while still following God's plan.]
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Jehu say he would serve Baal more than Ahab did?
Jehu said this to gather all the prophets and servants of Baal in one place, so he could destroy them, as seen in 2 Kings 10:19-20, fulfilling the word of the Lord spoken through Elijah, as mentioned in 2 Kings 10:17.
Was Jehu being sincere when he said he would serve Baal a lot?
No, Jehu was being deceptive, as stated in 2 Kings 10:19, in order to gather all the servants of Baal and destroy them, much like the Lord instructed the Israelites to destroy the idols and altars of foreign gods in Deuteronomy 12:3.
What can we learn from Jehu's actions in this verse?
We can learn that sometimes, in order to fulfill God's plan, we must be cunning and strategic, as seen in 2 Kings 10:18-20, but always with the intention of glorifying God, as stated in 1 Corinthians 10:31.
How does this verse relate to the overall story of 2 Kings?
This verse is a key part of Jehu's campaign to eradicate the worship of Baal from Israel, as prophesied in 1 Kings 21:20-24, and it shows how God uses human leaders to accomplish His purposes, as seen in Romans 11:25-26.
Reflection Questions

- How can I balance being truthful with being wise in my interactions with others, as Jehu did in this situation?
- What are some idols or false gods that I may be serving in my life, and how can I destroy them, as Jehu did with the servants of Baal?
- In what ways can I use my words and actions to glorify God, as Jehu ultimately did in this story?
