Context — Assurance of Victory
2The people are strong and tall, the descendants of the Anakim. You know about them, and you have heard it said, “Who can stand up to the sons of Anak?”
3But understand that today the LORD your God goes across ahead of you as a consuming fire; He will destroy them and subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and annihilate them swiftly, as the LORD has promised you. 4When the LORD your God has driven them out before you, do not say in your heart, “Because of my righteousness the LORD has brought me in to possess this land.” Rather, the LORD is driving out these nations before you because of their wickedness.Cross References

Deuteronomy 9:2 Summary
[This verse is talking about a group of very strong and tall people called the Anakim, who lived in the land that God was giving to the Israelites. The Israelites were afraid of them, but God was going to help the Israelites overcome their fear and defeat the Anakim, as promised in Deuteronomy 9:3. This reminds us that God is always with us and will help us overcome any challenges we face, just like He did for the Israelites, as seen in Joshua 1:9. We can trust in God's power and promises, rather than our own strength, and know that He will be with us every step of the way, as encouraged in Psalm 23:4.]
Frequently Asked Questions
Who were the Anakim mentioned in Deuteronomy 9:2?
The Anakim were a group of strong and tall people, descendants of Anak, who were known for their intimidating size and strength, as mentioned in Deuteronomy 9:2 and also in Joshua 11:21-22.
Why did the Israelites fear the sons of Anak?
The Israelites feared the sons of Anak because of their strength and size, which made them seem invincible, as expressed in the saying 'Who can stand up to the sons of Anak?' in Deuteronomy 9:2, similar to the fear expressed in Numbers 13:33.
How does this verse relate to the Israelites' faith?
This verse highlights the Israelites' need to trust in God's power and promises, rather than their own strength, as seen in Deuteronomy 9:3-4, where God promises to go ahead of them and destroy their enemies, similar to the promise in Exodus 14:14.
What can we learn from the Israelites' situation in Deuteronomy 9:2?
We can learn that God often calls us to trust Him in the face of overwhelming challenges, just as the Israelites were called to trust God in the face of the strong and tall Anakim, as encouraged in Psalm 27:1-3 and Isaiah 41:10.
