Exodus 34:15
Exodus 34:15 in Multiple Translations
Do not make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, for when they prostitute themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you, and you will eat their sacrifices.
Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, and one call thee, and thou eat of his sacrifice;
lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they play the harlot after their gods, and sacrifice unto their gods, and one call thee and thou eat of his sacrifice;
So see that you make no agreement with the people of the land, and do not go after their gods, or take part in their offerings, or be guests at their feasts,
Make sure you don't agree to a peace treaty with the people living in the land, for when they prostitute themselves by worshiping and sacrificing to their gods, they will invite you to join them, and you will eat from their pagan sacrifices.
Lest thou make a compact with the inhabitantes of the lande, and when they goe a whoring after their gods, and doe sacrifice vnto their gods, some man call thee, and thou eate of his sacrifice:
'Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitant of the land, and they have gone a-whoring after their gods, and have sacrificed to their gods, and [one] hath called to thee, and thou hast eaten of his sacrifice,
“Don’t make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, lest they play the prostitute after their gods, and sacrifice to their gods, and one call you and you eat of his sacrifice;
Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go astray after their gods, and do sacrifice to their gods, and one call thee, and thou eat of his sacrifice;
Make no covenant with the men of those countries lest, when they have committed fornication with their gods, and have adored their idols, some one call thee to eat of the things sacrificed.
Do not make peace agreements with any group that lives in that land. When they worship their gods and offer sacrifices to their gods, and they invite you to join them, do not join them. If you join them, you will eat the food that they sacrifice to their gods, and you will not be faithful to me. You will be like people who commit adultery, who are not being faithful to their spouses [MET].

Exodus 34:15 Summary
This verse is warning the Israelites not to make friends or alliances with the people who already live in the land, because those people worship false gods and will try to get the Israelites to join in. If the Israelites eat the sacrifices of these false gods, they will be taking part in their worship and turning away from the one true God, as seen in Exodus 34:15. This is like when we are tempted to fit in with the world and do things that don't please God, but we must remember to stay true to Him, just like it says in Psalm 119:57-58. By staying close to God and following His commands, we can avoid the dangers of idolatry and stay on the right path.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does God warn the Israelites not to make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land?
God warns the Israelites not to make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land because He knows that the inhabitants' idolatrous practices will lead the Israelites astray, causing them to compromise their faith and worship other gods, as seen in Exodus 34:15 and Deuteronomy 7:2-4.
What does it mean to 'prostitute themselves to their gods' in this verse?
To 'prostitute themselves to their gods' means to give oneself over to idolatry and immorality, abandoning the one true God and pursuing false worship, as warned against in Leviticus 20:5 and Deuteronomy 31:16.
How can we apply this warning to our own lives today?
We can apply this warning by being mindful of the company we keep and the influences we allow in our lives, ensuring that we do not compromise our faith or values, as encouraged in Psalm 1:1-3 and 2 Corinthians 6:14-18.
What is the consequence of eating the sacrifices of other gods?
Eating the sacrifices of other gods would lead to participation in their idolatrous worship, causing the Israelites to be drawn away from the one true God, as seen in Numbers 25:1-3 and 1 Corinthians 10:20-21.
