Judges 2:17
Judges 2:17 in Multiple Translations
Israel, however, did not listen to their judges. Instead, they prostituted themselves with other gods and bowed down to them. They quickly turned from the way of their fathers, who had walked in obedience to the LORD’s commandments; they did not do as their fathers had done.
And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so.
And yet they hearkened not unto their judges; for they played the harlot after other gods, and bowed themselves down unto them: they turned aside quickly out of the way wherein their fathers walked, obeying the commandments of Jehovah; but they did not so.
But still they would not give ear to their judges, but went after other gods and gave them worship; quickly turning from the way in which their fathers had gone, keeping the orders of the Lord; but they did not do so.
But even so, they refused to listen to their judges, and prostituted themselves by following other gods, bowing down in worship to them. They quickly abandoned the way their forefathers had followed, and they did not obey the Lord's commandments as their forefathers had.
But yet they would not obey their Iudges: for they went a whoring after other gods, and worshipped them, and turned quickly out of the way, wherein their fathers walked, obeying the commandements of the Lord: they did not so.
and also unto their judges they have not hearkened, but have gone a-whoring after other gods, and bow themselves to them; they have turned aside [with] haste out of the way [in] which their fathers walked to obey the commands of Jehovah — they have not done so.
Yet they didn’t listen to their judges; for they prostituted themselves to other gods, and bowed themselves down to them. They quickly turned away from the way in which their fathers walked, obeying the LORD’s commandments. They didn’t do so.
And yet they would not hearken to their judges, but they went astray after other gods, and bowed themselves to them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so.
Committing fornication with strange gods, and adoring them. They quickly forsook the way, in which their fathers had walked: and hearing the commandments of the Lord, they did all things contrary.
But the Israelis still would not pay attention to their leaders. Instead, they went to the idols, acting like prostitutes who gave themselves to men who were not their husbands [MET], and they worshiped those idols. They were not like their ancestors. Their ancestors obeyed what Yahweh commanded, but their descendants quickly stopped behaving as their ancestors had behaved.

Context — Judges Raised Up
17Israel, however, did not listen to their judges. Instead, they prostituted themselves with other gods and bowed down to them. They quickly turned from the way of their fathers, who had walked in obedience to the LORD’s commandments; they did not do as their fathers had done.
18Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for the Israelites, He was with that judge and saved them from the hands of their enemies while the judge was still alive; for the LORD was moved to pity by their groaning under those who oppressed them and afflicted them. 19But when the judge died, the Israelites became even more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods to serve them and bow down to them. They would not give up their evil practices and stubborn ways.Cross References

The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls. She held in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her sexual immorality. Judges 2:17 Summary
[The Israelites did not listen to their judges and instead worshiped other gods, which led to them quickly turning away from God's commandments, as seen in Judges 2:17. This is a warning to us to stay faithful to God and not follow after worldly things, just as we are encouraged to do in 1 John 2:15-17. We must be careful not to forget the ways of our spiritual heritage and to always follow God's guidance, as stated in Proverbs 3:1-2 and 6. By doing so, we can avoid the consequences of disobedience and stay on the path of obedience to God's commandments.]
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did the Israelites keep turning to other gods despite God's deliverance?
The Israelites turned to other gods because they did not listen to their judges and quickly forgot the ways of their fathers, who had walked in obedience to the LORD's commandments, as seen in Judges 2:17 and Deuteronomy 6:10-12.
What does it mean to 'prostitute themselves with other gods' in this verse?
To 'prostitute themselves with other gods' means to give their hearts and worship to false idols, which is a form of spiritual adultery, as warned against in Exodus 20:3-5 and Jeremiah 3:6-10.
How did the Israelites' actions affect their relationship with God?
The Israelites' actions led to God's hand being against them, bringing calamity, as stated in Judges 2:15, and they were greatly distressed as a result of their disobedience, much like the consequences described in Leviticus 26:14-39.
