Exodus 39:4 Summary

The shoulder pieces on the ephod were an important part of the high priest's garments, allowing him to move freely and confidently as he performed his duties. This verse shows us the value of careful planning and attention to detail, as well as the importance of being securely 'fastened' in our faith, like the ephod was fastened with its shoulder pieces (as seen in Exodus 39:4 and Ephesians 6:14). By following God's instructions and trusting in His provision, we can be confident and secure in our own spiritual journeys. Just as the high priest was called to serve and minister to others, we are also called to serve and love those around us, as seen in Matthew 22:37-40.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of the shoulder pieces on the ephod?

The shoulder pieces on the ephod were likely used to hold the ephod in place, allowing the high priest to perform his duties without restriction, as instructed by God in Exodus 39:4 and similar to the way God provided for the priests' needs in Exodus 28:6-14.

How does this verse relate to the overall design of the ephod?

This verse shows the attention to detail in the construction of the ephod, with the shoulder pieces being attached at two of its corners, demonstrating the care and craftsmanship that went into creating the priestly garments, as seen in Exodus 39:2-3.

What can we learn from the craftsmanship described in this verse?

The skill and attention to detail shown in the construction of the ephod, including the shoulder pieces, demonstrate the importance of excellence in our work, as seen in Colossians 3:23-24, where we are instructed to do our work heartily as for the Lord.

How does the ephod relate to the rest of the priestly garments?

The ephod, including its shoulder pieces, was a key part of the high priest's garments, which were designed to reflect the priest's role as a mediator between God and the people, as described in Exodus 28:1-5 and Leviticus 8:7-9.

Reflection Questions

  1. What can I learn from the attention to detail in the construction of the ephod, and how can I apply that to my own life and work?
  2. How does the idea of being 'fastened' or securely held in place relate to my own spiritual journey, and what can I do to deepen my sense of security in God?
  3. What role do I play in the 'priestly' work of serving and ministering to others, and how can I fulfill that role with excellence and care?
  4. How can I balance the need for careful planning and attention to detail with the need for faith and trust in God's provision, as seen in this verse and in the larger story of the Israelites?

They made shoulderpieces for it, to couple it together: by the two edges was it coupled together. No JFB commentary on these verses.

Ellicott's Commentary on Exodus 39:4

XXXIX. THE MAKING OF THE HOLY .(1-31) This section corresponds to Exodus 28:5-40, but does not follow exactly the same order. Exodus 39:2-7 correspond to Exodus 39:5-12 of Exodus 28; Exodus 39:8-21 to Exodus 39:13-28; Exodus 39:22-26 to Exodus 39:31-35; but after this a dislocation occurs. Exodus 39:27-29 correspond to Exodus 39:39-42 of Exodus 28, and Exodus 39:30-31 to Exodus 39:36-38. It is not clear why any change was made. The order observed in Exodus 28 seems preferable.
