Ezekiel 10:8 Summary

[Ezekiel 10:8 tells us that the cherubim, which are heavenly creatures, had hands under their wings, showing that God can reach out and be involved in human lives, just like a parent cares for their child. This is similar to what we see in Psalm 23:4, where God is our shepherd who guides us. The presence of these hands also reminds us of God's mercy and grace, as mentioned in Psalm 136:1, where we are called to give thanks to God for His enduring mercy.]

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the significance of the cherubim having human hands under their wings?

The human hands under the wings of the cherubim, as seen in Ezekiel 10:8, symbolize the divine capability to interact with and influence human affairs, much like how God reaches out to humanity through various means, as mentioned in Psalm 8:3-8.

How do the cherubim in Ezekiel relate to other biblical descriptions of cherubim?

The cherubim in Ezekiel 10:8 are similar to those described in Exodus 25:18-22, where they are depicted as guardians of the Ark of the Covenant, highlighting their role as protectors and servants of God's presence, as also seen in Isaiah 6:1-3.

What does the appearance of human hands under the wings of the cherubim reveal about God's nature?

The human hands under the cherubim's wings, as observed in Ezekiel 10:8, demonstrate God's willingness to extend His mercy and grace to humanity, reflecting His nature as described in Psalm 103:8, where it says He is 'slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness'.

How does this verse relate to the broader context of Ezekiel's vision?

Ezekiel 10:8 is part of a larger vision where Ezekiel sees God's glory departing from the temple, and the cherubim play a significant role in this event, as they are connected to the wheels and the movement of God's throne, as described in Ezekiel 1:15-21 and Ezekiel 10:9-10.

Reflection Questions

  1. What does the image of the cherubim's human hands under their wings evoke in my understanding of God's interaction with humanity?
  2. How can I reflect on the balance between God's divine nature and His willingness to engage with human affairs, as symbolized by the cherubim?
  3. In what ways can I see God's mercy and grace extended to me, much like the human hands reaching out from under the cherubim's wings?
  4. How does this verse influence my perception of God's presence and activity in the world, especially in relation to His throne and the wheels, as described in the surrounding verses?

Gill's Exposition on Ezekiel 10:8

And there appeared in the cherubim,.... The Septuagint version is, "I saw the cherubim"; and so the Syriac version, "I saw in the cherubim"; what follows: the form of a man's hand under their wings;

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Ezekiel 10:8

And there appeared in the cherubims the form of a man's hand under their wings. There appeared in the cherubim the form of a man's hand under their wings.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Ezekiel 10:8

There appeared to the prophet. The cherubims; the ministering spirits. The form of a man’ s hand; shaped to speedy, accurate working; it is therefore a man’ s hand. One hand was put forth to reach the fire, and that one is mentioned, though the angels had hands under their wings. Under their wings; the manner of angels’ working is hereby insinuated, for it is secret and speedy; secret, as hidden under wings; and speedy, as effected by the swiftest motion; the very speed hideth it.

Trapp's Commentary on Ezekiel 10:8

Ezekiel 10:8 And there appeared in the cherubims the form of a man’ s hand under their wings. Ver. 8. And there appeared the form of a man’ s hand under their wings.] Quasi gladius intra vaginam, as a sword within the scabbard, ready to be drawn out for execution. The hand, saith Aristotle, is the instrument of instruments. Nature hath given us hands, saith Cicero, multarum artium ministras, &c., to act and do business. Angels have neither hands nor wings, to speak properly, yet are said here to have both, to show their activity and celerity in God’ s service. Hands of a man they are said to have, to show that they do all prudently and with reason; and these hands are under their wings, saith one, to signify their hidden nature and operation. A good man, like a good angel, saith another, hath the wings of contemplation, the hands of action, the wings of faith, the hands of charity, wings whereon he raiseth his understanding, and hands wherewith he exciteth his will, &c. Essays Mor. and Theol., p. 33.

Adam Clarke's Commentary on Ezekiel 10:8

Verse 8. The form of a man's hand under their wings.] I am still of opinion that the hands and wings were not distinct. The arms were feathered like wings, and the hand terminated the arm; but as the long front feathers of the wings would extend much beyond the fingers, hence the hands would appear to be under the wings. See on Ezekiel 1:8. The human hand might be intended to show that God helps and punishes man by man; and that, in the general operations of his providence, he makes use of human agency.

Cambridge Bible on Ezekiel 10:8

8. On the “hands” of the cherubim, cf. ch. Ezekiel 1:8. Instead of depicting the conflagration of the city, which would have been impossible, the prophet’s attention is anew drawn to the cherubim, and a fresh description of the living creatures and of the divine chariot follows.

Barnes' Notes on Ezekiel 10:8

An explanation following upon the mention of the “hand.” It is characteristic of this chapter that the narrative is interrupted by explanatory comments.

Whedon's Commentary on Ezekiel 10:8

8. “And something like a human hand became visible on the cherubs under their wings.” — Kautzsch.
