Context — The Soul Who Sins Will Die
17He withholds his hand from harming the poor and takes no interest or usury. He keeps My ordinances and follows My statutes. Such a man will not die for his father’s iniquity. He will surely live.
18As for his father, he will die for his own iniquity, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother, and did what was wrong among his people. 19Yet you may ask, ‘Why shouldn’t the son bear the iniquity of his father?’ Since the son has done what is just and right, carefully observing all My statutes, he will surely live.Cross References

| 2 | Matthew 18:27–35 | His master had compassion on him, forgave his debt, and released him. But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii. He grabbed him and began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ So his fellow servant fell down and begged him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you back.’ But he refused. Instead, he went and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay his debt. When his fellow servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, and they went and recounted all of this to their master. Then the master summoned him and declared, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave all your debt because you begged me. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had on you?’ In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should repay all that he owed. That is how My heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart.” |

Ezekiel 18:17 Summary
[Ezekiel 18:17 is saying that if we treat others with kindness and respect, especially those who are less fortunate, and if we follow God's commands, then we will have eternal life. This means that we should try to help those in need and be fair in all our dealings, as seen in Micah 6:8, where it says 'to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God'. By doing so, we can be sure that we will not be punished for the sins of our parents, but will instead have a personal relationship with God. This is a promise that is repeated throughout the Bible, such as in Romans 6:23, where it says 'the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord'.]
