Context — The Broken Covenant
9And the LORD told me, “There is a conspiracy among the men of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem.
10They have returned to the sins of their forefathers who refused to obey My words. They have followed other gods to serve them. The house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken the covenant I made with their fathers. 11Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘I am about to bring upon them a disaster that they cannot escape. They will cry out to Me, but I will not listen to them.Cross References

Jeremiah 11:9 Summary
[This verse tells us that the people of Judah and Jerusalem were secretly working together against God, similar to the rebellion described in Numbers 14:1-4. They were disobeying God's commands and following their own selfish desires, as warned against in Proverbs 28:13. As a result, God was going to bring judgment upon them, as stated in Jeremiah 11:11. This reminds us that our actions have consequences, and that we must be careful to obey God's commands and follow His will, as encouraged in Psalm 37:3-7.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the conspiracy mentioned in Jeremiah 11:9?
The conspiracy refers to the collective actions of the people of Judah and Jerusalem in rejecting God's warnings and commands, as seen in Jeremiah 11:8, and instead following their own evil hearts, similar to the rebellion described in Deuteronomy 31:27.
Why did God tell Jeremiah about the conspiracy?
God informed Jeremiah about the conspiracy so that he would understand the reasons behind the judgment that was to come upon Judah and Jerusalem, as stated in Jeremiah 11:11, and as a call to repentance, similar to the prophetic warnings in Isaiah 1:1-31.
Is the conspiracy in Jeremiah 11:9 a physical plot or a spiritual one?
The conspiracy in Jeremiah 11:9 is more spiritual in nature, as it involves the people's deliberate rejection of God's commands and their decision to follow other gods, as mentioned in Jeremiah 11:10, similar to the idolatry condemned in Exodus 20:3-5.
How does this verse relate to the overall message of Jeremiah?
This verse fits into the larger narrative of Jeremiah, which emphasizes the need for God's people to repent and return to Him, as seen in Jeremiah 3:12-13, and warns of the consequences of disobedience, as stated in Jeremiah 11:11, echoing the themes of judgment and restoration found in Jeremiah 30:1-22.
Reflection Questions
- What are some ways that I might be participating in a 'conspiracy' against God's will in my own life, and how can I repent and turn back to Him?
- How can I balance the need to speak out against sin and rebellion with the need to love and pray for those who are caught up in it, as seen in Jeremiah's example?
- What are some areas in my life where I may be following my own 'evil heart' instead of obeying God's commands, and what steps can I take to align my heart with God's will?
- How can I cultivate a greater sense of reverence and fear of God, as seen in Jeremiah's prophetic ministry, and what role does this play in my own spiritual growth and obedience?
