Jeremiah 13:11
Jeremiah 13:11 in Multiple Translations
For just as a loincloth clings to a man’s waist, so I have made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to Me, declares the LORD, so that they might be My people for My renown and praise and glory. But they did not listen.
For as the girdle cleaveth to the loins of a man, so have I caused to cleave unto me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah, saith the LORD; that they might be unto me for a people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory: but they would not hear.
For as the girdle cleaveth to the loins of a man, so have I caused to cleave unto me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah, saith Jehovah; that they may be unto me for a people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory: but they would not hear.
For as a band goes tightly round a man's body, so I made all the people of Israel and all the people of Judah tightly united to me; so that they might be a people for me and a name and a praise and a glory: but they would not give ear.
In the same way that a loincloth holds tightly to the body, so I made all the people of Israel and Judah hold tightly to me, declares the Lord. Then they could have been my people, representing me, giving me honor and praise. But they refused to listen.
For as the girdle cleaueth to the loynes of a man, so haue I tied to me the whole house of Israel, and the whole house of Iudah, saith the Lord, that they might bee my people: that they might haue a name and prayse, and glory, but they would not heare.
For, as the girdle cleaveth unto the loins of a man, So I caused to cleave unto Me The whole house of Israel, And the whole house of Judah, an affirmation of Jehovah, To be to Me for a people, and for a name, And for praise, and for beauty, And they have not hearkened.
For as the belt clings to the waist of a man, so I have caused the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah to cling to me,’ says the LORD; ‘that they may be to me for a people, for a name, for praise, and for glory; but they would not hear.’
For as the girdle cleaveth to the loins of a man, so have I caused to cleave to me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah, saith the LORD; that they might be to me for a people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory: but they would not hear.
For as the girdle sticketh close to the loins of a man, so have I brought close to me all of the house of Israel, and all the house of Juda, saith the Lord: that they might be my people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory: but they would not hear.
Just like a waistcloth clings closely/tightly to a man’s waist, I wanted the people [MTY] of Israel and Judah to cling closely to me. I wanted them to be my people, people who would praise me and honor me. But they would not pay attention to me. “

Context — The Linen Loincloth
11For just as a loincloth clings to a man’s waist, so I have made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to Me, declares the LORD, so that they might be My people for My renown and praise and glory. But they did not listen.
12Therefore you are to tell them that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Every wineskin shall be filled with wine.’ And when they reply, ‘Don’t we surely know that every wineskin should be filled with wine?’ 13then you are to tell them that this is what the LORD says: ‘I am going to fill with drunkenness all who live in this land—the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets, and all the people of Jerusalem.Cross References

Jeremiah 13:11 Summary
[Jeremiah 13:11 tells us that God wants to have a very close relationship with His people, just like a loincloth clings to a person's waist. He wants us to be His people so that we can bring Him praise and glory, as seen in Psalm 29:1-2. However, the people in Jeremiah's time did not listen to God's desire for a close relationship. We can learn from their mistake by listening to God's words and following His commands, as encouraged in Proverbs 3:1-2 and Matthew 22:37-40.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the loincloth represent in Jeremiah 13:11?
The loincloth in Jeremiah 13:11 represents the close relationship God desires to have with His people, similar to how a loincloth clings to a man's waist, as seen in the intimacy and closeness described in Deuteronomy 10:20 and Hosea 11:4.
Why did God want the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah to cling to Him?
God wanted the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah to cling to Him so that they might be His people for His renown, praise, and glory, as stated in Jeremiah 13:11, reflecting the covenant promise in Exodus 19:5-6.
What was the response of the people to God's desire for a close relationship?
Unfortunately, the people did not listen to God's desire for a close relationship, as stated in Jeremiah 13:11, and instead followed their own stubborn hearts, as described in Jeremiah 13:10, and went after other gods, similar to the idolatry mentioned in Jeremiah 2:13 and Ezekiel 6:9.
How does this verse relate to the concept of being 'My people'?
The concept of being 'My people' in Jeremiah 13:11 is rooted in the covenant promise made to Israel in Exodus 6:7 and reiterated in 2 Corinthians 6:16, where God says 'I will be their God, and they will be my people', emphasizing a deep, personal relationship between God and His people.
