16And the people to whom they prophesy will be thrown into the streets of Jerusalem because of famine and sword. There will be no one to bury them or their wives, their sons or their daughters. I will pour out their own evil upon them. 17You are to speak this word to them: ‘My eyes overflow with tears; day and night they do not cease, for the virgin daughter of my people has been shattered by a crushing blow, a severely grievous wound.Cross References

The longstanding verdict against them remains in force, and their destruction does not sleep. |
Jeremiah 14:15 Summary
This verse is saying that there were prophets who were claiming to speak for God, but they were not really sent by Him. They were telling the people that everything would be okay and that no harm would come to them, but this was not true. As a result, these prophets would face the very judgments they were trying to convince others would not happen, as seen in Jeremiah 14:15. This teaches us to be careful who we listen to and to make sure that what they are saying aligns with God's word, as seen in Isaiah 8:20 where it is written to consult the law and the testimony.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean that the prophets were prophesying in God's name without being sent by Him?
This means that these prophets were claiming to speak on behalf of God, but they had not been commissioned or authorized by Him to do so, as seen in Jeremiah 14:14 where the Lord says, 'I did not send them or appoint them or speak to them.'
Why did the prophets prophesy that no sword or famine would touch the land?
The prophets were prophesying lies and false visions, as stated in Jeremiah 14:14, in order to give the people a false sense of security and hope, rather than speaking the truth of God's judgment, similar to what is seen in Ezekiel 13:10 where the prophets spoke false words of peace.
What is the consequence for the prophets who prophesied falsely in God's name?
According to Jeremiah 14:15, these prophets will meet their end by sword and famine, which is a direct result of their disobedience and false prophesying, as also seen in Deuteronomy 18:20 where it is written that a false prophet will be put to death.
How does this verse relate to the concept of false prophets in the Bible?
This verse is a clear example of the biblical warning against false prophets, as seen in Matthew 7:15 and Matthew 24:11, where Jesus warns against false prophets who will arise and lead many astray, and in 2 Peter 2:1 where it is written that false prophets will bring destructive heresies.
Reflection Questions
- What are some ways that I may be listening to or following false prophets in my own life, and how can I discern the truth of God's word?
- How can I be sure that I am hearing from God and not from my own desires or the influence of others, as seen in Jeremiah 14:14 where the prophets were prophesying from their own minds?
- What are some areas in my life where I may be seeking a false sense of security or comfort, rather than trusting in God's sovereignty and plan, as seen in Jeremiah 14:13 where the people were seeking lasting peace?
- How can I be a voice of truth and warning to those around me, as Jeremiah was to the people of Judah, and what are the potential consequences of not speaking the truth?
