Context — The Stubbornness of the People
15Then all the men who knew that their wives were burning incense to other gods, and all the women standing by—a great assembly—along with all the people living in the land of Egypt and in Pathros, said to Jeremiah,
16“As for the word you have spoken to us in the name of the LORD, we will not listen to you! 17Instead, we will do everything we vowed to do: We will burn incense to the Queen of Heaven and offer drink offerings to her, just as we, our fathers, our kings, and our officials did in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. At that time we had plenty of food and good things, and we saw no disaster.Cross References

You finished them off, but they refused to accept discipline. They have made their faces harder than stone and refused to repent. Then I said, “They are only the poor; they have played the fool, for they do not know the way of the LORD, the justice of their God. I will go to the powerful and speak to them. Surely they know the way of the LORD, the justice of their God.” But they too, with one accord, had broken the yoke and torn off the chains. |

Jeremiah 44:15 Summary
[This verse shows that the Israelite men and women in Egypt were gathered together, and they knew that their wives were worshiping other gods, which is a sin. They were about to respond to Jeremiah's message, but instead of listening, they would refuse and continue in their idolatry, as seen in Jeremiah 44:15-19. This reminds us that we must be careful not to prioritize other things above God, as warned in Exodus 20:3-5 and Deuteronomy 13:6-10. We must seek to honor God in all that we do, and listen to His messages, as seen in Psalm 119:105 and Proverbs 1:7.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What were the Israelite men and women in Egypt doing that was so wrong?
They were burning incense to other gods, which is a form of idolatry, as seen in Jeremiah 44:15, and is also warned against in Deuteronomy 13:6-10 and Exodus 20:3-5.
Why did the people gather to respond to Jeremiah's message?
The people gathered to respond to Jeremiah because they were being confronted about their sinful actions, and they wanted to justify their behavior, as seen in Jeremiah 44:15-19, similar to the response of the people in Isaiah 30:9-11.
What can we learn from the Israelites' refusal to listen to Jeremiah?
We can learn that refusing to listen to God's warnings and messages can lead to spiritual blindness and hardness of heart, as seen in Jeremiah 44:16, and also in Romans 11:25 and Hebrews 3:7-8.
How does this verse relate to the concept of spiritual leadership in the home?
This verse highlights the importance of spiritual leadership in the home, as the men knew about their wives' idolatrous actions, and it is implied that they should have taken action to stop it, as seen in Ephesians 5:25-33 and 1 Corinthians 16:13-14.
Reflection Questions
- What are some ways that I may be justifying or excusing my own sinful behaviors, and how can I humbly repent and turn to God?
- How can I, like Jeremiah, lovingly and courageously speak truth to those around me who may be engaging in idolatrous or sinful actions?
- In what ways can I prioritize spiritual leadership in my own home and relationships, and seek to honor God in all that I do?
- What are some 'other gods' that I may be unknowingly worshiping or prioritizing in my life, and how can I surrender them to God?
