Job 34:32 Summary

This verse is about asking God to show us what we don't know or understand, and to help us see our mistakes so we can learn from them and not repeat them. It's like saying, 'God, I don't know what I'm doing wrong, please help me see it and I'll try to do better.' This is a humble and honest approach to our relationship with God, recognizing that we need His guidance and wisdom, as seen in Proverbs 3:5-6. By asking God to teach us, we can grow in our understanding of Him and of ourselves, and become more like Jesus, who is our ultimate example of humility and obedience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean to ask God to teach us what we cannot see?

This means we are asking God to reveal to us our blind spots and areas where we may be sinning or living in ignorance, as the Psalmist did in Psalm 19:12, and to give us wisdom and understanding, as promised in James 1:5.

How can we be assured that God will teach us and guide us?

We can be assured that God will teach and guide us because He is our loving Father, as seen in Matthew 7:7-11, and He desires for us to know and follow Him, as stated in Jeremiah 29:12-13.

What is the condition for God to teach us, according to this verse?

The condition is that we must be willing to acknowledge and repent of our wrongdoing, as expressed in the phrase 'if I have done wrong, I will not do it again', which aligns with the principle of repentance in Luke 13:3 and 2 Corinthians 7:10.

How does this verse relate to our everyday lives?

This verse relates to our everyday lives because it encourages us to be humble and open to learning and growth, recognizing that we do not have all the answers, and to trust in God's goodness and wisdom, as expressed in Proverbs 3:5-6.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some areas in my life where I may be 'blind' to my own sin or ignorance, and how can I ask God to reveal them to me?
  2. What does it mean for me to truly repent and turn away from wrongdoing, and how can I apply this to my life?
  3. How can I cultivate a humble and teachable heart, willing to learn from God and others?
  4. What are some ways I can demonstrate my willingness to learn and grow, and to trust in God's guidance and wisdom?

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Job 34:32

That which I see not teach thou me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Job 34:32

I will no longer maintain mine innocency, but from thy judgments I will conclude and have reason to believe that there are some secret sins in me, for which thou dost chastise me, and which I through mine ignorance or partiality cannot yet discover, and therefore do beg that thou wouldst by thy Spirit manifest them to me. If I have done iniquity, I will amend my former errors.

Trapp's Commentary on Job 34:32

Job 34:32 [That which] I see not teach thou me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more.Ver. 32. That which I see not, teach thou me] For I am yet in the dark, and know not the right cause wherefore thou afflictest me. Herein men are very apt to mistake themselves, and when God calls one way to run another, as young Samuel did, i Sam. iii. 5. The devil also dealeth by the afflicted as the Jews did by Christ, blindfolds them, and then bids them prophesy who smote them, and for what? Hence in afflictions we many times grope as blind men, guessing at this cause and at that, but seldom fasten on the right. Here, then, God must be sought unto for direction, and besought that he would graciously point us to the sin he strikes at. This Job had done once and again, Job 10:2; Job 13:23. But Elihu would have him to do it yet better. If I have done iniquity, I will do no more] Thus men must both vow and perform to the Lord their God, Psalms 76:11, and not promise amendment, as children do when taken up to be whipped; or as men in danger at sea, or on their sick beds, use to do largely; but then Sciaputo il morbo, fiaudato il santo, as the Italian proverb hath it, When the disease is removed the saint is defrauded. Pharaoh promised fair while upon the rack; but got off once, he hardened his heart, and would do nothing. So those slippery votaries, Jeremiah 34:11.

Ellicott's Commentary on Job 34:32

(31, 32) I have borne chastisement . . .—These verses express the attitude that should be assumed towards God: one of submission and penitence.

Adam Clarke's Commentary on Job 34:32

Verse 32. That which I see not] "What I do not know, teach thou me; wherein I have done iniquity, I will do so no more."

Cambridge Bible on Job 34:32

29–33. The connexion of the following verses is rather uncertain. The sense of Job 34:30 might suggest the connexion of Job 34:29-30 with the preceding. In this case Job 34:31 would make a new start, and the connexion would be maintained to the end of the chapter. It is probable, however, that Job 34:34-37 should be taken by themselves. In Job 34:29 the word he is emphatic; similarly in Job 34:31 an emphasis falls on God. This common emphasis, in Job 34:29-30 on the absoluteness of God’s operation and in Job 34:31-33 on the presumption of any one who questions it, seems to bind these two groups of verses together. The verses read as a whole, 29. When he giveth quietness, who shall condemn him? And when he hideth his face, who shall behold him? Whether it be done to a nation or to a man alike: 30. That the godless man reign not, That the people be not ensnared. 31. For hath any said unto God, I have borne (chastisement) though I offend not, 32. That which I see not teach thou me, If I have done iniquity I will do it no more?— 33. Shall God’s recompense be according to thy mind That thou dost reject it? For thou must choose, and not I; Therefore speak what thou knowest.

Barnes' Notes on Job 34:32

That which I see not, teach thou me - That is, in regard to my errors and sins. No prayer could be more appropriate than this.

Whedon's Commentary on Job 34:32

32. That which I see not — áìòãé, without, beyond: — that which lies beyond my vision. The expression points to latent sins — unknown iniquity. The soul is a darkened chamber that hides its own uncleanness.
