Context — The Defeat at Ai
11Israel has sinned; they have transgressed My covenant that I commanded them, and they have taken some of what was devoted to destruction. Indeed, they have stolen and lied, and they have put these things with their own possessions.
12This is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies. They will turn their backs and run from their enemies, because they themselves have been set apart for destruction. I will no longer be with you unless you remove from among you whatever is devoted to destruction. 13Get up and consecrate the people, saying, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Among you, O Israel, there are things devoted to destruction. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them.Cross References

Joshua 7:11 Summary
[This verse is telling us that the Israelites did something very wrong - they took things that were supposed to be destroyed and kept them for themselves, which was against God's commands, as seen in Deuteronomy 20:16-18. This was a big deal because it showed that they didn't trust or obey God. When we disobey God, it can have serious consequences, just like it did for the Israelites, as seen in Joshua 7:12. We can learn from their mistake by being honest and obedient to God, and trusting in His goodness and love, as encouraged in Psalm 37:3-7 and Proverbs 3:5-6.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What covenant is being referred to in Joshua 7:11?
The covenant being referred to is the one God made with the Israelites, as seen in Exodus 19:5 and Deuteronomy 29:1, where they agreed to obey God's commands and not take anything devoted to destruction.
What does it mean to take something 'devoted to destruction'?
In the context of Joshua 7:11, it refers to taking spoils from a city that God had commanded to be completely destroyed, as seen in Deuteronomy 20:16-18, and using them for personal gain instead of dedicating them to God.
How does this verse relate to the concept of sin and its consequences?
This verse illustrates how sin, such as disobedience and dishonesty, can have serious consequences, as seen in Joshua 7:12, and that God takes sin seriously, as stated in Psalm 51:4 and Proverbs 28:13.
What is the significance of the Israelites 'stealing and lying' in this verse?
The actions of stealing and lying, as mentioned in Joshua 7:11, demonstrate a lack of trust and obedience to God, and are reminiscent of the sins that led to the fall of humanity, as seen in Genesis 3:6, and highlight the need for honesty and integrity, as encouraged in Proverbs 10:9 and Colossians 3:9-10.
