13Get up and consecrate the people, saying, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Among you, O Israel, there are things devoted to destruction. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them. 14In the morning you must present yourselves tribe by tribe. Joshua 7:12 Summary
This verse explains that the Israelites are unable to stand against their enemies because they have sinned against God by taking what was devoted to destruction. As a result, God's presence is withdrawn from them, and they are in danger of being destroyed. To restore God's presence and favor, they must remove the devoted things from among them and consecrate themselves, as seen in Joshua 7:13 (similar to what is described in 2 Corinthians 7:1). This serves as a reminder that sin can have serious consequences, but repentance and turning back to God can restore our relationship with Him, as described in 1 John 1:9.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the reason for the Israelites' inability to stand against their enemies?
The Israelites' inability to stand against their enemies is due to their sin of taking what was devoted to destruction, as stated in Joshua 7:11, which is a transgression of God's covenant, as seen in Joshua 7:11 and Exodus 20:15.
What does it mean to be 'set apart for destruction'?
To be 'set apart for destruction' means that the Israelites have become subject to God's judgment and wrath, similar to what is described in Romans 1:28, and are in danger of being destroyed unless they repent and remove the devoted things from among them, as commanded in Joshua 7:13.
Can God's presence be withdrawn from His people?
Yes, God's presence can be withdrawn from His people if they persist in sin, as seen in this verse, and also in Psalm 51:11, where David asks God not to take His Holy Spirit from him.
How can the Israelites restore God's presence and favor?
The Israelites can restore God's presence and favor by removing the devoted things from among them, as commanded in Joshua 7:13, and by consecrating themselves, as seen in Joshua 7:13, and by repenting and turning back to God, as described in 2 Chronicles 7:14.
