9“Your servants have come from a very distant land,” they replied, “because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard the reports about Him: all that He did in Egypt,
10and all that He did to the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan—Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth. 11So the elders and inhabitants of our land told us, ‘Take provisions for your journey; go to meet them and say to them: We are your servants. Please make a treaty with us.’Cross References

Joshua 9:9 Summary
This verse shows that the Hivites had heard about God's amazing works in Egypt, such as the parting of the Red Sea, and they wanted to make a treaty with the Israelites because of God's great fame. The Hivites were trying to make friends with the Israelites, but they were actually trying to deceive them, as seen in the rest of Joshua chapter 9. This verse reminds us that God's works and fame can be a powerful witness to those around us, as seen in Psalm 106:8, where it says that God's works are to be remembered for all generations. We can learn from the Hivites' example by being honest and seeking to build genuine relationships with others, rather than trying to manipulate or deceive them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did the Hivites claim to have come from a very distant land?
The Hivites were trying to deceive the Israelites, as seen in Joshua 9:9, in order to make a treaty with them, and their claim of coming from a distant land was a tactic to gain the Israelites' trust, much like the tactics used by Jacob in Genesis 27:1-40 to deceive his father Isaac.
What reports about God had the Hivites heard?
The Hivites had heard about God's mighty works in Egypt, as mentioned in Joshua 9:9, which is a reference to the miracles and plagues described in the book of Exodus, such as the parting of the Red Sea in Exodus 14:13-31.
Was it common for people to travel long distances to hear about God's fame?
In biblical times, it was not uncommon for people to travel great distances to hear about the fame of a particular god or deity, as seen in 1 Kings 10:1-13 where the queen of Sheba traveled to meet King Solomon to hear about his wisdom and the God he served.
How does this verse relate to the concept of faith?
This verse highlights the idea that faith can come from hearing about God's works, as seen in Romans 10:17, where it says that faith comes from hearing the message about Christ, and this is what the Hivites had done, they had heard about God's works and were seeking to make a treaty with His people.
Reflection Questions
- What are some ways that I can share the fame of God with those around me, just like the reports of God's works in Egypt were shared with the Hivites?
- How can I use my own experiences of God's faithfulness to encourage others and build their faith, just like the Hivites were encouraged by the reports they had heard?
- In what ways can I be more intentional about seeking out and learning about God's works, just like the Hivites sought out the Israelites to learn more about their God?
- What are some potential dangers of seeking to follow God based on hearsay or second-hand reports, rather than seeking a personal relationship with Him, as seen in the Hivites' attempt to make a treaty with the Israelites?
