Context — Purification after Childbirth
4The woman shall continue in purification from her bleeding for thirty-three days. She must not touch anything sacred or go into the sanctuary until the days of her purification are complete.
5If, however, she gives birth to a daughter, the woman will be unclean for two weeks as she is during her menstruation. Then she must continue in purification from her bleeding for sixty-six days. 6When the days of her purification are complete, whether for a son or for a daughter, she is to bring to the priest at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting a year-old lamb for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a turtledove for a sin offering.Cross References

| 2 | Leviticus 15:25–28 | When a woman has a discharge of her blood for many days at a time other than her menstrual period, or if it continues beyond her period, she will be unclean all the days of her unclean discharge, just as she is during the days of her menstruation. Any bed on which she lies or any furniture on which she sits during the days of her discharge will be unclean, like her bed during her menstrual period. Anyone who touches these things will be unclean; he must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean until evening. When a woman is cleansed of her discharge, she must count off seven days, and after that she will be ceremonially clean. |

Leviticus 12:4 Summary
This verse is talking about a woman who has just given birth to a baby, and she needs to wait thirty-three days before she can be considered pure again. This waiting period was to protect her and others from any potential ceremonial uncleanness, as seen in Leviticus 15:25-30. During this time, she couldn't touch anything sacred or go into the sanctuary, which was a special place where God's people worshiped Him, as seen in Exodus 25:8. This reminds us that God calls us to be set apart for His purposes, and to obey His commands, even when we don't fully understand them, as seen in Romans 12:1-2 and 2 Corinthians 7:1.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did the woman have to wait thirty-three days for purification after giving birth to a son?
According to Leviticus 12:4, the woman had to wait thirty-three days to ensure she was fully purified from her bleeding, and this waiting period was likely to protect her and others from any potential ceremonial uncleanness, as seen in Leviticus 15:25-30.
What would happen if the woman touched something sacred during her purification period?
If the woman touched something sacred during her purification period, she would likely defile it, as stated in Leviticus 12:4, and would need to take steps to restore her ceremonial purity, as seen in Leviticus 15:31.
Why was the woman not allowed to go into the sanctuary during her purification period?
The woman was not allowed to go into the sanctuary during her purification period because she was considered ceremonially unclean, and entering the sanctuary in this state would have defiled it, as stated in Leviticus 12:4 and supported by Leviticus 15:31.
How does this verse relate to the concept of ceremonial purity in the Old Testament?
This verse is part of the larger context of ceremonial purity in the Old Testament, as seen in books such as Leviticus and Numbers, where God's people were called to be separate and holy, as stated in Leviticus 11:44-45 and Deuteronomy 14:2.
