Context — The Day of Atonement
13He is to put the incense on the fire before the LORD, and the cloud of incense will cover the mercy seat above the Testimony, so that he will not die.
14And he is to take some of the bull’s blood and sprinkle it with his finger on the east side of the mercy seat; then he shall sprinkle some of it with his finger seven times before the mercy seat. 15Aaron shall then slaughter the goat for the sin offering for the people and bring its blood behind the veil, and with its blood he must do as he did with the bull’s blood: He is to sprinkle it against the mercy seat and in front of it.Cross References

Leviticus 16:13 Summary
[This verse is talking about a special ritual where the high priest would put incense on the fire in the temple to create a cloud that would cover the mercy seat, which was a symbol of God's throne. This was important because it allowed the high priest to come into God's presence without dying, as seen in Leviticus 16:2. The incense represented the prayers of the people rising to God, like in Psalm 141:2. By following God's instructions, the high priest was able to safely approach God and make atonement for the people's sins.]
Frequently Asked Questions
Why was incense used in the temple rituals?
The incense was used to symbolize the prayers of the people rising to God, as seen in Psalm 141:2, and to create a sacred atmosphere, as mentioned in Exodus 30:7-8.
What is the significance of the mercy seat in this verse?
The mercy seat, also known as the atonement cover, was a symbol of God's throne and the place where He dwelled among His people, as described in Exodus 25:17-22 and Leviticus 16:2.
Why would the high priest die if he did not follow this procedure?
The high priest would die if he did not follow the proper procedure because he would be in the presence of a holy God without the proper atonement, as seen in Leviticus 16:2 and Hebrews 9:7-8.
How does this verse relate to the concept of atonement in the Bible?
This verse is part of the larger context of the Day of Atonement, which was a ritual to atone for the sins of the people, as described in Leviticus 16:1-34 and foreshadowing the ultimate atonement through Jesus Christ in Romans 3:25 and Hebrews 9:11-15.
