Context — The Dedication of the Wall
43On that day they offered great sacrifices, rejoicing because God had given them great joy. The women and children also rejoiced, so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard from afar.
44And on that same day men were appointed over the rooms that housed the supplies, contributions, firstfruits, and tithes. The portions specified by the Law for the priests and Levites were gathered into these storerooms from the fields of the villages, because Judah rejoiced over the priests and Levites who were serving. 45They performed the service of their God and the service of purification, along with the singers and gatekeepers, as David and his son Solomon had prescribed.Cross References

Nehemiah 12:43 Summary
[This verse describes a time when the Israelites came together to worship and give thanks to God, offering sacrifices and rejoicing because God had given them great joy, much like the kind of joy described in Psalm 16:11. The women and children were also part of the celebration, and the joy was so great that it could be heard from far away. This shows us the importance of community and shared worship, as seen in Hebrews 10:25, and the value of expressing our gratitude and joy to God for His blessings in our lives. By coming together to worship and give thanks, we can experience the kind of joy that the Israelites had, and we can bring glory to God, as described in 1 Corinthians 10:31.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of sacrifices were offered on this day?
The Bible doesn't specify the type of sacrifices, but we know from other passages like Leviticus 7:11-21 that sacrifices of thanksgiving and joy were common in Israelite worship, and it's likely that these were the kind of sacrifices offered here, as the people were rejoicing because God had given them great joy.
Why was it significant that the women and children rejoiced?
The inclusion of women and children in the rejoicing emphasizes that this was a community-wide celebration, and that everyone was involved and affected by God's joy, much like the scene described in Deuteronomy 31:12 where the whole community, including women and children, are gathered to hear the reading of the Law.
How does this verse relate to the rest of the chapter?
This verse is part of a larger narrative describing the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, and the joy and celebration that accompanied it, as seen in Nehemiah 12:27-30, and it highlights the significance of this event for the community as a whole, as they come together to worship and give thanks to God.
What can we learn from the Israelites' example of rejoicing in this verse?
We can learn the importance of expressing gratitude and joy to God for His blessings, as seen in Psalm 100:4-5, and the value of community-wide celebration and worship, as described in Acts 2:46-47, where the early church came together to break bread and praise God.
