Zephaniah 1:4
Zephaniah 1:4 in Multiple Translations
“I will stretch out My hand against Judah and against all who dwell in Jerusalem. I will cut off from this place every remnant of Baal, the names of the idolatrous and pagan priests—
I will also stretch out mine hand upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, and the name of the Chemarims with the priests;
And I will stretch out my hand upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, and the name of the Chemarim with the priests;
And my hand will be stretched out on Judah and on all the people of Jerusalem, cutting off the name of the Baal from this place, and the name of the false priests,
I will strike Judah and everyone who lives in Jerusalem. I will destroy all that remains of their Baal worship along with their pagan priests so that even their names will be forgotten.
I will also stretch out mine hand vpon Iudah, and vpon all the inhabitants of Ierusalem, and I wil cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, and the name of the Chemarims with ye Priestes,
And stretched out My hand against Judah, And against all inhabiting Jerusalem, And cut off from this place the remnant of Baal, The name of the idolatrous priests, with the priests,
I will stretch out my hand against Judah and against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place—the name of the idolatrous and pagan priests,
I will also stretch out my hand upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, and the name of the Chemarims with the priests;
And I will stretch out my hand upon Juda, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem: and I will destroy out of this place the remnant of Baal, and the names of the wardens of the temples with the priests:
“These are some of the things that I will do: I will punish the people who live in Jerusalem and other places in Judah. I will destroy everything that has been used in the worship of Baal. I will cause people to no longer remember the names of the pagan priests or the other priests who have turned away from me.

Zephaniah 1:4 Summary
This verse is saying that God is going to judge the people of Judah and Jerusalem for their idolatry and false worship. He wants to remove all the false gods and priests from the land, just like He said in Deuteronomy 12:2-3. This is a call for God's people to turn back to Him and worship Him alone, as we are reminded in Exodus 20:3-5 to have no other gods before Him. By prioritizing our relationship with God and seeking to follow Him wholeheartedly, we can avoid the kinds of idolatrous practices condemned in this verse.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean for God to 'stretch out His hand' against Judah and Jerusalem?
This is a figurative expression meaning God's judgment and intervention, as seen in other scriptures like Isaiah 5:25 and Ezekiel 6:14, where God's outstretched hand brings punishment.
Who are the 'idolatrous and pagan priests' mentioned in this verse?
These are individuals who have led the people of Judah and Jerusalem away from the one true God, promoting the worship of false idols like Baal, as condemned in Deuteronomy 13:6-10 and 2 Kings 12:3.
Is this verse still relevant for believers today?
Yes, the principle of God's judgment on idolatry remains relevant, as seen in 1 Corinthians 10:21-22, where believers are warned against participating in idolatrous practices, and in 1 John 5:21, where we are commanded to keep ourselves from idols.
How does this verse relate to the concept of God's mercy and love?
While this verse emphasizes God's judgment, it is also a call to repentance, demonstrating God's desire for His people to turn back to Him, as seen in Zephaniah 3:17 and Joel 2:13, which highlight God's mercy and love for those who return to Him.
